First and foremost thank you to all who can help. I have read some other posts about this in this forum as well, and have watched the YouTube videos. This is my first truck (RIP my 2004 Taurus), and due to a limited budget, was bought used and is a very basic version.

Anyhow, my goal is to install cruise control and I think I'm mostly there. Here's (photos) where my inexperience got me to a wall. In all videos I am seeing, it appears that there are two "ports" for wiring behind the airbag, that way you can connect both the cruise and the ground wires to the steering wheel.

That doesn't seem to be my case, and perhaps this means my Tacoma wasn't "pre-wired", but I can't tell.

Not sure if you can tell from the images, but it's almost like I have to choose between the ground wire or the cruise, and I have a feeling I can't just say "screw it" to the ground wire.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but any help would be much appreciated. Happy 2017 to you all!

Edit: The problem has been solved, for future generations, here are all the parts I bought:

    Cruise module: http://www.ebay.com/itm/391277811128?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

    Cruise cover: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Steering-Wh...Toyota-Tacoma-45186-04030-B0-New/222307101249

Cruise Harness (if you had the same problem as me of only having one port for connecting both the ground wire and the cruise harness):
    https://parts.toyotaofcoolsprings.com/oe-toyota/8463304020?origin=pla&gclid=CKbVhdySs9ECFdgNgQodUecIvw

Note: it might say it is not compatible with your 2014 Tacoma, but if you are looking at the pictures above and having the same problem as me, this should work (worked for me).

If you did NOT have the problem of only having one port, you shouldn't need anything but the harness that comes with the cruise module you got from eBay.

My total came out to $56 or so. Would've been much cheaper if the harness hadn't been an issue, but still a great price and took me no longer than 20 minutes to get it done. Hope this helps someone else someday!

I read something about pulling the ground wire out of its white "shell" and inserting it into the same shell from the cruise control plug (4 slots and only 2 are taken). Certainly would hate to break it trying, but would be curious to hear if anyone has done that.

Edit: I think the word I am looking for is "depinning".

https://youtu.be/TjoTus5q5p0 For installation steps; as for the "depinning", it was on a item description on eBay. I'll try to find the link, but they were poorly written instructions anyhow.

I think this is the answer. I take it you already clipped the grounding wire from the harness that came with the cruise control?

Let me see if i cn find it for mine. There is a little slit in the white plug that allows you to open it up and remove it from the factory one, and add it to the cruise control one, i had to do this to mine to ensure the ground for the horn and cruise both worked.

That's where it got frustrating: mine didn't come with the ground wire attached to the cruise like in the video, so now I'm trying to see if I can find the wire alone for sale, before I break something.

I'm glad to hear it has been done before, then! Anything you might have showing how it is done would be much appreciated. I'm trying to find a ground wire for sale online so that at least I can test out the "wire transferring" with a Guinea pig, and not my original wire.

Mine didnt have the ground wire either, it just came with the one wire, and i had to remove mine from the clip that was there, and place it in the new clip. It seems like there was a thread on here for it. I looked last night for the instructions, but it was late, and i will look again today after i get home. Hopefully we can get it figured out for ya.

Thank you very much for the help; with English being my second language I probably wasn't using the correct keywords when looking for the instructions on this specific part of the process, so if you come across it, I'll certainly much appreciate it.

In any case at this point I'm just glad to hear that I wasn't the only one having the problem. Every video I have been watching shows the person cutting the ground wire off the cruise harness and it makes me cringe/jealous, haha. Either that, or the ones that don't cut it, seem to have two slots to insert them.

So at this point I can't think of another solution other than moving the wire into the cruise harness or finding a harness that already has both wires in it.

Do you remember where you got the harness? That was my thing too; everyone here is talking about spending $90-$150, and I got my cruise module for $13 here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/391277811128?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

So I mean, if I can either just find the harness with 2 wires (I hate that you paid $80 just for that!) or move the wire into the cruise harness, my total project cost will have been $22 bucks.

I got my cruise cover here, for $10: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Steering-Wh...Toyota-Tacoma-45186-04030-B0-New/222307101249

I found this on a link in eBay, but am still a tad worried about ruining it. Until I find a guinea pig ground wire to test it with, I think I will have to wait.

"FYI - You will need to move the horn wire to the new cruise harness.
The plug you remove so that the cruise plug I provide will work has a single wire on it that needs to be transferred to the harness I send. This is your horn wire. Make sure you note the position of it on the old plug so you can correctly remove and reinstall it into the new plug.
    To remove the connector:
    1) Take a thin bladed knife and pry the rectangular retainer up from both plugs.
    2) Carefully keeping your fingertips out of the way of the sharp connector pin, pop it loose and install it in the other.
    3) Snap the rectangular retainer back in. If it won't go all the way down, the connector pin is not seated properly. If the white plug won't plug snugly into the clockspring assembly, the retainer may not be seated properly.
(Easy to do. Hard to describe.)"

i know, i looked everywhere for that wire harness and ended up at the dealer for it. i did try the splice into the existing wire harness but it didnt work. that 3rd wire is the ground for the airbag. i didn't need it blowing up when i turned the truck on :). even when i hooked it all together and was ready to start the truck i did it from the passenger seat

this is the video i followed for the install.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51qbO6UXAxg&t=8s

Hahahahahah, that's sadly exactly what I was doing. Literally ducking under my steering wheel the whole time with the seat as far back as possible.

What do you think went wrong with the splicing option? I read that you have to make sure to include it in the same little hole as it was before, which I am curious about looking at again. There are 4 little holes, the ground wire harness' has 3 empty, and the cruise control harness has 2 empty. From memory, the holes used overlap, so I am foreseeing that being a problem even if I do manage to splice it.

i had the oem harness from the dealer which i would have returned if the splice worked. i ended up just busting up that whole little plastic pc. i didn't have the right tools, crimpers, etc.

I suspect I am onto something here...

    http://parts.toyotaofcoolsprings.com/toyota/tacoma/846330e020/2014-year/pre-runner-trim/2-7l-l4-gas-engine/steering-cat/shroud-switches-and-levers-scat/?part_name=cruise-switch-wiredit

Edit: this is the wrong part; the picture makes it look right, but I went in person to the store and turns out the picture is wrong. This wire is the same one that comes with the cruise module I got from eBay (only 1 wire on the harness).

Worst case I will just buy a regular wire and try to switch them around on my own. Thank you all for your help!

Yeah man... I hate that you paid that much for it? I am picking one up from a local dealership for $16 because I don't feel like waiting for it to be shipped. But if it hasn't been that long, I'd try to return it?
