Hard to say without being there but you had some good advice on the 80Hz crossover frequency for a starting point. Make sure bass boost is off. Maybe set the bass flat on your head unit or even pull it below flat. Keep the sub subtle. It shouldn't dominate the music...just fill in the low end. That hole for the wire needs to be completely sealed too.

I don't think so. You did and excellent job presenting that information.

Someone will read this thread and be very appreciative of what you've written.

It is incredibly knowledgeable. I am beyond happy with all this info it is clear and layed out beautifully. I seriously appreciate it Dolbytone and everyone else!! I am aiming for simple and effective. The descriptions made here really lay out what I should listen for. At the current settings the sub defiantly needs to be set to the correct settings. I still have some work to do. Especially with my ears. Thankyou all.

For the record, Dolby, that was not a stab at you. You give a lot to this community and I'll be the first to commend you for it. Just figured OP might appreciate a simple solution.

I appreciate it all. I could have never dreamed of how much knowledge this thread would be filled with. I didn’t mean for anyone to think I was stabbing at them either. I seriously enjoy making and listening to music. Ideally I want the truck to eventually sound like a perfect symphony. With the ability to sound amazing with literally all types of music. You all are helping me get there one step at a time. I do know my amp and sub could have been paired better but I think at the end of it all with the correct settings and wiring they will work in harmony. And eventually I can add even more harmonious tweeters and better door speakers. Thankyou!!!

    Whe
When you say set the bass flat are you talking about my bass knob by my drivers seat?

I meant the bass setting on your head unit - or those EQ bands if that's what you have. Do you have a separate bass knob for the sub amp?

    Thankyou for this.
I should have known the mathematical systems that go into the production of sound, as with everything in this world the base of it all is math.
Here is what my simple brain has gathered from your impressive knowledge,

all of this after I set sub to 2 ohms.
number 1 low pass filter should be set at 80Hz

number 2 should be all the way down at 0

and number 3 should be low as well 4-5?
And in the mean time I should read the manual. And do this process through the procedure JL lays out.

Yes I have a bass knob for the sub amp.
I was playing with it at its current settings and it definitely drowns out the music when it’s high.

Gotcha. That makes things a little trickier, but if you can turn it all the way down and you can't hear it right now, seems like you found the sweet spot. If not, maybe pull a little out of the gain.

Gain depends on a few factors. There's no right answer there. It needs to be set for your specific setup. That's why I mentioned starting from zero, playing tracks you know well, and slowly increasing 'till it just fills in the bottom end. The bass knob complicates things a little as they aren't all linear, but maybe set the bass knob at 1/2, or maybe even 2/3 since you're feeding the sub a lot more power at 2 ohms, then set the gain.

Yip, car audio got me into pro AV - which I'll probably do 'till I retire. I doubt my job is as fun as yours though . IIRC Dolby is in the game as well.

Update on current settings for this setup...
After sealing the hole fully and listening to the sub for 3 days I have come down to a few conclusions..

1 the stock door speakers and tweeters way underperform the sub (kinda obvious) these will need a upgrade

2 after listening to quite a few tracks the sub is definitely not receiving enough power at 8 ohms. Even with the volume on the bass knob at 2/3 and the volume at 45 you can tell the sub is lacking.
I messed with the 3rd knob and set it in the middle 0 and found that to far to the left and the sub hardly made sound and to far to the right it became distorted.

3 I left the amp at 80Hz and 0 DB and didn’t really mess with these. Messing with them makes me Think I need a professional set of ears. Especially after messing with knob number 3 and having a hard time hearing what I was doing.
It is clear things are not linear. With all the different variables- bass knob volume- dash volume- 3 different settings on the amp, what ohms to set the sub at and Song choice.
8 ohms just doesn’t sound right with these settings and amp.

Now I will Swap to 2 ohms and keep it at 80 hz on knob 1 and start from 0 on knob 2 and 3.

Changing impedance shouldn't change the way it sounds. It's just going to be louder.

Impedance factors into how well the amplifier controls the speaker's resonance and momentum. It absolutely has an effect on sound quality.

    Okay
I figured especially since larzz and you said 8 ohms with this amp will significantly be underpowered for this sub.
