Waiting on the kit to arrive, but I just wanted to say that this write up looks like it will be extremely helpful. Thanks for taking the time to add pictures and such detail. I think I'm in the same boat as you- started out looking for an used 2nd gen, found a brand new 3rd gen for a little bit more with some great tech (streamlined touch screen, Android Auto, back up cam, safety sensors, but no remote locks).

    Hi,

I did this mod about 6 months ago and everything has worked fine. Tonight, it no longer turns lights on, toots the horn, or unlocks or locks the doors. It does operate the pop lock tailgate lock that I installed. Any thoughts?

    Thanks
    David

Do you have a sketch showing how you wired in your tailgate lock to the keyless entry? That could give a clue as to why that works but the rest doesn’t. Doubt this is a factor but have you tried with both key fobs?

I don't have a sketch. I wired it like the instructions say over by the passenger side door.

I think I know when and how I broke it. I just don't know what I broke. I removed the door panels to put in new speakers following the instructions on the better speakers for less than $250 thread. I installed the speakers and reinstalled. All the buttons work on the drivers side door and unlock the passenger door and the tailgate along with rolling up and down the windows. Nothing happens on the drivers side when I try to lock it and unlock it though. I took the door panel off again and removed and reinstalled the wire plug but no change. Another strange thing. If I screwed something up in the door, why would the horn and lights stop working with the key fob but the passenger door and tailgate still work?

That’s a tough one, maybe look in the areas you put on new speakers especially drivers side. There’s also a troubleshooting chart in the keyless entry instructions.

Thanks for this write up - this is great and super detailed. Just installed this remote keyless kit on my 2021 Tacoma SR utility package.

When you lock/unlock the doors are the high beams supposed to turn on? I would think the low beams would, not sure if this is a 2021 wiring difference. Also, does anyone know what the tail light wire is for? It doesn't seem like the tail lights are triggering on mine, not even when panic mode is pressed.

-Edit/update - wiring color on the 2021 is identical to previous models, the tails/license plate lights do flash if you following the wiring in this tutorial.

My 2016 works the same as yours so I bet you wired it correctly.

Swap the tap to the Green TAIL circuit on connector C11 to the Hazard circuit on connector A33 pin 4 (yellow wire)

Don’t do anything until you check how things are working. Both high and low beams come on for 30 seconds when you press lock or unlock. Tail lights only momentarily flash when you press lock or unlock - stand behind and watch the tail lights (also the tag lights) flash when you press.

Post a quick video of that. Luv to see how one tap turns High & Low.

See the last page of the instructions linked on the first page of this thread. I made a video on my iPhone but format appears to not be supported here?

I think it’s just the high beam wire. Although yes an easy “cheat” is to take the headlight wire from the module off of the high beam and don’t use it at all. Then run the TAIL wire from the module to the yellow wire on A33. That way your truck flashes the hazards on lock / unlock... like a normal truck :) Here’s a video of it working on my truck. This is the exact kit linked in the first page.

    I see the circuit.
But still say change the TAIL to Haz so ALL turn signals flash. Much brighter than the TAILS flashing.

i was just telling him how the headlights and tail lights work as designed per the instructions. Turn signals front and rear already flash 3 seconds. Wiring tail wire to hazard will give a brighter tail for three seconds lol. He just asked if was working right didn’t feel the need to tell him to rewire. And yes it is both high and low beams that come on for 30 seconds. I’m pretty sure I can find my truck even in the dark :D

I'm liking the hazards flashing in the video. Where is the A33 connector located? around the steering column/ignition or is it behind the hazard button?

just installed on my 2021 SR. Same problem, rear lights don’t flash. If I leave the connector not connected to the column then the rears work! After I connect it, the rears stop working. The fronts still flash tho.

connecting to the hazard I like the idea but I don’t want to take anymore dash off then I need to.

Can I just tap into the fuse box hazard light fuse?
