I have a 2004 Toyota Tacoma, 2wd,two door, 2RZ. I want to install a aftermarket tachometer onto my truck. What wire and where do I tap into to connect the tachometer?

Why not go a factory tach?

you can pick up a used tach from any 01-04 (make sure it came from a 4cyl model) if you want the white face gauges. and as long as you record mileage it doesn't matter what's on it.

The odometer is a pull out module that can be swap into a new cluster.

Is it possible to swap the mechanical speedo over to a later cluster?

    In a word no...

But if you like the later style coloring there are new style gauge faces you can order for your cluster

I figured not but thought I'd ask to make sure. I don't want the white gauges, I just wish I didn't need the most expensive cluster option to swap in a factory tach :bananadead:

Thought I got lucky on one but it's from a 5 lug, my rpms are reading pretty low for now.

@Speedytech7 I'm looking for the whole cluster from a 95-97 2.7l, but it's not really a priority at the moment - just saw this relevant thread pop up  They show up on ebay for 200+ every once in a while...

So, the op's question was never answered. Looking to do the same thing on my '99 5-lug. I'd like to do the cluster swap, but they are getting expensive now.

Hey, I have a white face cluster with a Tach from when I went through this same exercise. It's a direct swap into your 99. I've been meaning to put it up in the BST but have been too lazy...

I bought it for almost $190 (overpaid because I thought the mileage was a match but I was off by 5k...) but it can be yours for $120 shipped. I can PM you more pics if interested. It's from a 5 speed 6 cyl (so no A/T idiot lights). If you are going to reprogram the mileage to match your truck, the engine size can be changed too so the tach reads correctly for a 4 cyl. That's what I ended up doing. @mechanicjon can reprogram. PM him for more info on that.

I had a 97 5 lug, and it didn't come with a tach. I went to a wrecking yard and found one off a 2001 6 lug (iirc).

I installed it in the parking lot. It was pretty easy.

Only problem was when I traded it in for my current truck and the dealer didn't fill out the DMV paperwork correctly, and I got an angry call from some DMV inspector asking why the mileage didn't match.

I don't have the $$ to drop on a factory cluster, let alone finding one that will work on a '99 5-lug. Plus I really don't want the hassle of messing with my odometer. Truck has 306k on it and I'm kinda proud of that. It just keeps on going. That's why I'm looking to install an aftermarket tach, just for monitoring the engine and such. Further, Toyotas don't last long down here in the junkyards. My luck of finding one like that would mean I need to buy 3 lottery tickets.
