I got some vinyl tailgate lettering and it says it has to be at least 60 degrees out to do it. Has anyone done it in say 40 degree weather and had no problems? I won't see a 60 degree day for at least a few months and I don't think I can wait that long lol.

Do you have a garage or know someone with one to keep the temps around the 60°

The temperature suggestion is related to the vinyl adhesion and flexibility. You can still do it, but it’s going to be more difficult. Too hot is also an issue.

    Hope that helps you.

I found the easiest way to apply was to clean the tailgate and then spray on a mixture of soapy water (dish soap). You can then lay the lettering on and easily slide it around to get it in the right position. Pat dry then let dry. I tried one free hand without the soapy water and could not get it lined up correctly.

I did my wheel decals in a 50 degree garage, the cold made it kinda easy to readjust the decal. After it was placed I hit it with my heat gun set on low. Been through a few washes and it worked fine.

With a tailgate, I think @YOTA 4X4 is spot on.

Well, let’s see if Chevy’s brand new tailgate can do that.

Agree with the soapy water being used. Mine went on super easy and slid right in to place.

I did my tufskins with a heat gun and a digital thermometer to make sure I was in the middle range that Tufskinz recommend and they worked fine. I’m sure a hair dryer would do the same but I had a heat gun with me and no hair dryer. I got the tailgate warm and then hit hit each letter just a little bit as it was a cold morning.

That's just a "for best results" suggestion. I used to work for a sign shop and have installed vinyl anywhere from 10 to 100 degrees, and while it definitely works better in more moderate temps, it's still doable in almost any environment. If you're using an application fluid, it will take a little longer to dry and for the vinyl to adhere at lower temperatures. Bringing the tailgate inside is the best suggestion, and it gives you the added benefit of working on a horizontal surface.

Wish I did this. It is difficult to place perfectly when dry.
