I feel like so many Wives and Girlfriends are gonna be mad at me now.... surprisingly my wife thought it was quite funny to have a tailgate on the dining room table.

On a side note it’s MUCH easier the lay down the letters with the tailgate in that orientation.

Good luck OP and anyone else who wants to remove their tailgate for lettering. There’s a lot of good threads on TW if you don’t know how to disconnect the wiring. Though it’s not at all difficult.

I don't recommend dish soap, as usually it is VERY harsh on paint. Use some car wash soap. You don't need much (3-4 drops to a spray bottle) and probably have someone with some. You can get a small one from Walmart for a few bucks (Blue Coral or such). In a pinch, and when working with 3M, you can use Isopropyl alcohol (not mixed with water).

Funny story... I built an engine on my dining room table. Only reason I got away with it - was it was the engine for my wife's car. I took pictures.

If you have baby shampoo, you won't have time to do this...

A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
That is the best way --I did mine in my over-cluttered wood heated garage. If you bring it your home, send your wife out shopping for a while, and have it done by the time she gets back

Thanks for all the tips! I'll probably wait till the weekend when the wife is working and put it on my living room floor. Ill clean it up and I do like the idea of using carwash instead of dishsoap to clean it up/apply the vinyl. My Mother in law has a vinyl printer so I am going to scan them on to her computer before it do it in case I screw them up.

I restore older Japanese motorcycles for fun. The tank on this Suzuki was pretty rusty inside so I put a handful of drywall screws in it, wrapped it in a blanket, duct taped it, and then tossed it in the clothes dryer for an hour or so on "air" setting. Worked like a charm, but never, ever, get caught by She Who Must Be Obeyed. Oh yeah, I second the car wash soap method for decals or vinyl lettering.

Nice Suzuki! I’m currently rebuilding a ‘79 XS750. You should hang out over here and show some pictures of your work:
