Does the 2wd cluster have the 4x4 light included in the cluster, but not utilized (no bulb in the socket)?

if you get one from a donor PreRunner it wouldn't have the 4wd light to begin with :)

I just watched this guy's video and never noticed where the 4wd light would be.

edit: but to answer your question if it's a 2wd cluster (4x2) then it would not have the 4wd wired in (possibly dead ground?). the wiring harness may be similar or it may not include the circuit for it to begin with, I am not sure though :notsure:

The clusters are the same it has the light for 4wd, there is no bulb installed. If you use the cluster from a manual on an auto, you have no gear selector lights that work and vise versa using a auto on a manual. The only difference in the cluster is the tach sensor on the back of the cluster. One is calibrated for the v6 and one for the 4cyl. I have used 2wd in a 4wd, just had to install a bulb. Everything else is plug and play for the 98+.

You would have take it somewhere to have the mileage changed on the digital odometer.

It all plug and play, just three plugs. Unless you have the extra plug for the center locking differential, I think it is.

Only issue is the odometer. Its pretty involved to change the milage to match the old one. It involved desoldering the eprom chip on the speedometer, hooking it up to a PC with a serial port, and doing some hexadecimal work.

Like I said, $100-150 is a little pricey for me. I was wondering how much modification is needed just in case a came across a 4Runner at the junkyard. And which years/options require the least modification to fit a 96 Tacoma 2.4L with 5-speed.

it's $100-150 now or major fines if you have to claim something or sell it later with improper mileage shown.

also as stated the 95-97 use a cable driven speedometer, you would need a cluster from a 95-97 with tach

No it wont. The digital odometer does not have the input in the back for the speedometer cable. It relies on data from the transmission speed sensor, which is not a digital signal. If you have a cable in your truck for the speedometer, you will need to find a cluster that ALSO has a cable input to it.

It's not difficult at all to keep your mileage correct and accurate. I did the non-tach to tach style cluster on my 97 last year and am glad that I did. All you have to do is find the correct cluster with a speedometer that is cable driven like yours, then open it up, swap out your original speedometer/odometer into the new one that has the tach, and you are done. It took me about 10 minutes to get the new cluster ready to install. When I plugged it all it, the tach worked great, and all was fine. And I didn't have any trouble with my truck being a 4 cyl and the donor truck being a 6 cyl because the tach gets it's signal from the ECU, not the engine.

Im not talking about pre 98 clusters, all the 98+ clusters are electronic with electronic speedometers. I am asking about the odometer specifically.

Sorry. I was going by the OP and what he had initially been talking about the 95-97 model clusters, since that is what he was looking for. I have seen some people try to figure out a way to install the 98 and newer clusters into a 97 or older truck which won't work.

the mileage is recorded in the cluster. so whatever cluster you put in will reflect the donor's mileage and not yours. For the digital it's probably easier to take it somewhere unless you know how to program it :(

with all this hassle I just went with an Autogauge aftermarket tach which almost completely matches the stock cluster's look

ya like Bama said 95-97 you can switch out the mechanical tumbler and have it back in most likely in less than an hour even for an the non-mechanically-inclined.

a big part of the issue was finding a mechanical one that was a reasonable price. I never saw one for less than $250 when i was looking. I decided that the reduced cost of the aftermarket tach was worth not having the factory look since my truck isn't super nice to begin with.
