I've got an 04 taco dbl cab 4x4. My instrument lights quit coming on. The switch is on and the knob that adjusts the light intensity is all the way up. Any ideas? I don't even know how to begin diagnosis.

I don't know about the 04's, but on my 06, If you go all the way up on the intensity it shuts off. Pull it back just a little and it is at highest setting. Hope that's all it is.

Is it only the lights in the instrument cluster, or all the dash lights, that don't work?

Check fuses, check your cig lighter outlet wires ( yes this can cause them to go out, it happened to me ) Did you have an aftermarket radio? If so check those wires.

Ok I've tried moving the dial but no good. I'll check fuses tonight. It is all of the lights on the dash. Stereo AC heat controls. Everything. The lights for 4x4, diff lock, OD Off lights come on still. I've not got an aftermarket stereo. The truck is completly stock. I'll check the cigarette lighter wires.

It's not just a fuse, and it's not just a bad ground. If it were - *ALL* the lights would be 'out', and the ones you mentioned as still working wouldn't be working ...

The junction of the wires with the light wiring. Look for a loose connection, frayed/damaged wire or a loose ground wire.

Not quite, there will be a black box with 5 wires running in and 4 wires running out (or vice versa not completely sure)

the box is completely sealed, I couldn't get into it even after taking it off. your going to need a new one, which is about $14 dollars from any auto parts store.

this is going to be the issue if you keep blowing the dome light fuse which will kill your tail lights and instrument cluster too.

    best of luck

i had the same problem when i first got my truck. There is some kind of short or something behind the cluster. If you hit the top of the dash right above it it should come back on in a 2 or 3 hits. They have been staying on ever since i did that 8 months ago. Give it a try it wont hurt anything
