In order to obtain a title you have to apply for one...what’s the word apply legally mean? To ask, plead, request or beg. When you beg the state for a title that’s makes you subservient to them. You have to do what they say because you can only “own” the equity rights and the liability to a motor vehicle. Try buying a vehicle from a dealer and tell them you want to retain possession of the MCO....not gonna happen. The title is your confiscation receipt...proof the vehicle was confiscated at the point of sale...why would you even need a title if your not going to register or insure the vehicle or drive it on the public road?

So what are the real life implications of what you’re saying?

I can purchase a vehicle, keep it, sell it, or cut it up for scrap. At the end of the day, I’ve done what I wanted.

    Jiminy Christmas. WTF.

My Certificate of Title says that I and only I am the owner of my vehicle. It is clearly there in black and white. The certification part is the state's administrative part to announce it. This is to prevent something called Grand Theft Auto. I got mine within two weeks of my purchase. Ownership went from Toyota, to the dealer, to me. I can now do whatever the hell I want with it. I have never had to ask the state to sell or junk any of my vehicles. They lay no claim to it.

Your registration (plates) allows you the privilege to drive on your state's roads. Your state owns your roads. You own your vehicle.

What, are we going to get a lecture on sovereign citizens next?

I hate AMAZON and NEVER bought from them. If AMAZON is the ONLY place I can find it, I don't need it.
I NEVER relay on dealer to do my maintenance. Seen guys that spend $$$$ for upgrades and mods but cheapen for good oil and take it to the dealer begging for cheap work.
I bought my truck up front/cash. Got the title in one week from the MVD.
Title is for you to prove that you OWN that vehicle and the bank or lender has no claim on it (one bank employee idiot types the wrong VIN and sends the repo man to get your truck. You show him the title and tell him to beat it). State/Gov owns your truck???? Ha, ha, ha. Even if you owe $$$ to IRS they can not take your house and transportation if you agree for a payment plan.
Registration (with plate #) is another State scam to get money from you but is necessary to identify YOU from all the others tacos on the road in case you mow down granny and take off.
I never got any calls or emails from the insurance (me/wife/daughter). Long ago my wife got a letter asking for the odom reading. I filled it with 1.000.000 and also added some window cleaning adds I got in the jumk mail. Never heard from them in over a year.
PRIVACY - you gave it up long time ago. Stop looking for it. Or do like I did. Keep your address real and pull up names/birth dates/emails/ages from your ass for each domain you log in. In my house live 17 people...:)

Guess that depends where you live, we have no inspection, no emission testing, and no asking for your mileage during registration renewal.

Probably should take the time to educate yourself on the four corners rule as it relates to legal documents then report back...

In my state you receive title and turn it into DMV office when you get your registration. When you pay your vehicle off. Then title is mailed to you. If you buy a vehicle an it is paid for DMV takes your title. Mails you a title in a few weeks with your name on title as owner of that vehicle.

I'll jump back in just to say this.

Title is an abstract thing, but can also refer to a document. Title is a set of rights you have as owner of something, the right to possess, use, sell, borrow money against etc.

A certificate of title is just a document to prove your claim to something, if someone takes the paper title to your car they don't magically own it, you would need to sign it to that person.

You give the MCO to the DMV along with a bill of sale to prove to the state that you paid for and therefore own the vehicle. They then issue a certificate of title which takes over the role of proof of ownership from the MCO. In New York at least, the dealer will give you the MCO if you want to go to the DMV and title it yourself. They also are supposed to keep a copy on file and release it to you upon request.

The long and short of it is, when you pay for a car that is what confers ownership. The bill of sale, MCO, certificate of title are just legal documents stating that fact.

If they are lost, stolen or destroyed you still OWN it, and by possession still have the strongest claim to it.

I am an insurance agent in PA my CO represents numerous insurance companies some companies have an option where you can list your mileage every year but none REQUIRE it to be listed. Also, I've never heard or known of companies accessing service records but it is possible and each state is different. A few companies have plug in devices that monitor your driving, braking, etc but now they are offering cell phone apps that do the same thing always figured if you have the app they will know if you're texting and driving?

Good points last few posts...the concept of ownership as it relates to motor vehicles would be easy to resolve all we need is the legal definition of certificate of title in writing from the issuing authority...a lot of smart folks here so who’s got it? In writing from the issuing authority...”Certificate of title”
