Intake valve cleaning

Hello Folks,

Does anyone did the intake valve cleaning by themselves before? I have some hard start in winter and the truck is 62500 miles on it. Any suggestions would be nice.

What makes you think its the intake valves? I doubt it is...

 

We have D4-S dual port and direct injection. You're valves are just fine.

 

The dealership suggested doing the intake valve cleaning back in 60K service but don't want to pay that much back then. The service advisor said the new direct-injection design will cause carbon to build-up on the intake valve.
So that's my info coming from.

 

How's your trucks battery life?

Spark plugs could be considered at 60k though?

 

These engines are both port and direct injected. Yes, direct injection will cause carbon buildup, but it only uses direct injection when it needs power. Port injection will help to clean those off. So, unless you're running fill bore all the time, some fuel system cleaner should suffice.

 

Replaced with Odyssey AGM. Voltage is good at 12.8

 

Yeah, that's why I think so and I don't wanna pay them extra for that service.
They had replaced my plugs back in 30k... they did a successful attempt to extract money back then...

 

That's a bit low for an AGM. Are you topping it up with an AGM charger every once in a while?


Also note that you can bump the alternator charging voltage with vF Tuner.

 

That sucks! You should be good until 90k at least on the plugs. They are not too bad to swap at home. I checked all of mine when folks were reporting loose plugs from the factory.

Find another place to service your truck.

They are preying on your ignorance and your wallet.

 

Don't trust what a dealer tells you. If Toyota doesn't recommend it in the maintenance schedule tell them to shove it. You're due for plugs. If you've never changed them I'd start there.

Edit: See you had plugs done already. Not sure on your issue but don't think dirty intake valves is it.

Yes, could be the spark plus loose too.

 

When the engine's running, it is 14. When the engine is stop, it's 12.8

 

The thought is that it is a factory issue. I would think that if they were replaced, you're good to go. Not horrible to check though.

14v above idle is good. The resting voltage is a touch low from my experience. Might keep an eye on it. Of course, it might just be winter weather.

I wouldn't be surprised to see carbon buildup at 60k miles. My personal car (Audi S3) has both port fuel and direct injection and after 20k miles with the port fuel kit it had substantial carbon build up. The VW/Audi shop I work at we do carbon cleans weekly on various cars. Most customers go between 40k-80k miles between cleans. I'll see if I can find pics of my car last time we had the manifold off. My car has a turbo but the older direct injected N/A V8's had major carbon build up issues.

 

Thanks, Photo would be nice to show how bad it is. But, MAN! Weekly to do the cleaning? Must be nice to have a shop to do it! I don't think my neighbors want those bad carbon smells from my garage every week!

 

Should have clarified, we do carbon cleans. Not the same car's every week. The process we use is you scrape the gummy soft stuff off then blast the ports with a walnut blaster. Rinse, repeat and then make sure everything is clean before re-assembly.
