intake is for cool sounds only. Look on offer up. Picked up a GT momentum for $100 with the filter.

The way I see it, i got a reusable filter for a good price that came with the intake box and now my truck SOUNDS more powerful.

I have a K&N intake. It's in a box in the attic. It does nothing but sound obnoxious. Err-cool!

I'll sell it to you, for cheap. Send me a pm.

I have a volant intake i believe the truck had it when i bought it. Looks nice but i couldn't tell you if it has more power or sounds better because the ultra loud drone of the mbrp exhaust drowns everything out especially my brain lol.

I like it because it didn't cost a dime.
It hasn't been proven that anything from the aftermarket gives any gain in performance, just noise.

surrrius answer - have you seen the size of the stock intake? Relatively for the air the engine actually draws, its already a monster. Same with the stock filter - I have had big block V8s with a smaller intake and filter than what comes stock on the Tacoma.

Long gone are the days of carburetors and adjusting air/fuel with a screwdriver. Whatever aftermarket feelgoodery you bolt on there, the computer is going to promptly ignore and keep adjusting air to how it sees fit.

That's why people are polluting your thread with "keep it stock." You might not like the answer, but it's the real answer. The engine and all controlling firmware are optimized for the stock air volume; any intake replacement can only give you a similar power output at-best, or decrease performance at worst. Save that money for a truck part that will actually give you a noticeable difference.

Lucky for you, every one of us have intakes. And unless someone comes along recommending something aftermarket is better, as a means of justifying that they paid for something that is equal to stock (or worse), the general consensus is there's no proven performance gain going aftermarket. Thats the reason the majority don't waste their money on it. You can think we're all being mean, but the truth hurts sometimes; save that money and put it towards something else that COULD yield some better performance stats; ex: KDMAX tune, lighter wheels, brakes, supercharger.

Like others have said, the intakes on these trucks are a CAI design already that pics up from the passenger fender, but they are a little unsightly. I upgraded mine to get a better filter and smoother air inlet. I decided against the Injen Evolution that I was originally planning on after spending some time offroad in a cloud of dust. Figured it would be better to hop up the stock airbox and try to preserve the filter and oil a bit more. If the truck was strictly on-road the Injen would get my vote, but in mixed terrain I feel like this will be a better option. I also don't like how the Injen intake blocks visibility and access to some of the fluids.

I went with the K&N 57-9039 JR Intake Kit (tube and filter) and the TRD Intake Flow Accelerator. IMO this is visually nicer and much cheaper than the full TRD kit but should provide all of the gains (if not more due to a better tube design). I also removed the carbon filter from the airbox lid. I wasn't expecting huge gains, but I am very impressed with how the truck feels. The throttle response is much snappier, it seems like it downshifts easier/smoother/faster and from a stop it accelerates easier. Best way I can describe it is the truck feels like it's lighter. I've seen quite a few reviews that say this increases mpg by 1-2, but haven't noticed anything after 1k miles or so. I'm not sure if it added any power as I don't drive it that hard most of the time, but the smoothness gains make it worthwhile. The intake is audibly unnoticeable until around 4000 RPM and then it's like a switch is flipped and the suction noise gets pretty loud, which is about as perfect as you can ask for on a DD IMO. I'm happy there's no droning without the giant resonator on the intake tube - no idea why that needs to be there on the stock tube either - it's just a huge heatsoak.

    Whole setup was ~$170.

Opted for the TRD intake when I bought my truck, partly because of the appearance, and partly because I like the idea of a reusable filter. I drive on a lot of dusty roads, and was changing filters a lot on my previous (2018) Taco, so it might wind up saving me some money in the long run....might.
Does it make the engine perform "significantly" better? Not that anyone can prove, but then again neither do my beadlock wheels. In both cases, the performance improvement is marginal, but my happiness with how the truck looks is real.

BTW: there is an older thread on this topic that covers a lot of the same material. The original post is quite articulate. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/trd-intake-review-2016.469911/

Replaced stock air filter with a Wix. Wix filters still filter as well as OEM and net almost as much HP as K&Ns. With as much dust as I drive through, that’s important to me.

I have an HPS intake tube, k&n filter (gasp), and the cowl intake mod.

Does it give more power? No. Was I able to order a new tube while living in CA? Nope. Had to buy used. Is it too loud? Kind of. Will I eventually swap it all back to stock? Maybe. But I don’t want to be a buster either.

I have the same K&N FIPK tube/filter, and agree with everything you said. I am genuinely happy with it, makes my TRD (Borla) exhaust sound mildly better too. I am curious about the charcoal filter and intake accelerator... did you do everything at once or could you say one thing helped out more than the other? Pretty sure I would fail CA smog without the charcoal filter, but not sure how they would know.

Installed all together. Also noticed the intake making the exhaust louder. I had to quiet down my MF Overland Series after installing the intake.

No Cali stuff here so not sure what they would do there if they noticed. All my other vehicles have had cone filters so figured I wouldn't miss it. Not sure if it made much difference but it's not going back on.
