Probably gonna just have to buy one. There are more people using the black one vs. ones wanting the chrome. Its worth the money.

That is a bit harder to do correctly. Dip is for anyone, and if you mess up, peel it off and try again.

Wet sand and paint flat or satin black. Satins and flats are easy to get a good finish on. This is a mustang spoiler I painted with duplicolor rattle can

I’ve never been one for plastidip, but I’m actually very pleased with how mine turned out. I HATE painting of any sort, but this was easy enough I didn’t screw it up. Plus it cost me like $5.99 for a can at Lowe’s.

Does the plastidip require any special prep other than clean and dry it well? I've never worked with the stuff.

Clean, remove any lint, spray. I usually do 3-4 coats so it will peel easier

I actually used throttle body cleaner. Probably a better way but it was clean and dry.

ETA: plus I had a can in my shop.

Is the plastidip pretty solid, or prone to "chipping" from small rocks or pebbles or other crap? My chrome trim looks like its taking a beating, so I figure a dipped one will too... just curious how "tough" plastidip is, in your opinions. How many coats of dip is everyone applying? Thanks!

It’s plastic so it doesn’t chip. Might get little pits over time .

I dipped my chrome grille bezel to match the 18/19 TRD grille and it has held up great. More coats is always a good thing - the thicker the coat the harder it will be for it to chip or scratch. Plus if it does you can always touch it up. Pretty sure I put around 6 coats of black and 2 coats of glossifier on my grille bezel.

I ended up putting seven coats on it with ~15min breaks in between to let it dry. It only took about half of a can. I just did mine recently but it seems like it’ll hold up better than the straight hard plastic bezel since it almost has a rubber consistency to it.

I'll also add that mine holds up perfectly fine even with washing the truck with a pressure washer.

Sounds like 6-7 coats is a good target... I'll have to give it a try. Did you all hit it with a clearcoat of any type afterwards? Or just leave it as is? I think I'd want mine more matte finish than glossy.

With only two coats of the glossifier mine is more of a satin if anything - definitely closer to matte than glossy.
