Didn't have a seat belt or was wearing what was available then, just a lap belt?
Sorry man, but there's been years and years of advancements in technology and engineering. The safety of modern cars has been proven time and time again.
Sitting on the internet refuting that and saying it's all hype just makes you sound like you lack intelligence.

And what does the material choice of any of those have to do with a consumer vehicle? Maybe you and I do very different things with our trucks or have different expectations, but I'm struggling to see a connection.

Does the Navy put an aircraft carrier through a small overlap crash test?

    A lot!
A steel or metal bumper could be shaped/hammered back into shape, primed paint and is GTO.

A plastic one, not so much.
However, plastic is cheaper (not for you though) great for higher insurance rates and new parts sales and the economy. But Just not your economy.

    Go on...

Whether you agree with it or not, the purpose of the bumper from a car manufacturer's perspective has changed over the years. And cost wasn't the reason for the change.

The point I was trying to make is that an aircraft carrier and a Tacoma have different design requirements in mind that influence what materials are used. I don't look at a nuclear sub and think, "Those cheap bastards at Toyota are screwing us with gas powered vehicles when they should be giving us a portable reactor." Like maybe there's another reason outside of cost for these decisions...

Your severely missing the point on why modern vehicles are made the way they are, I've had to replace plastic bumpers that cost 4 times as much as a basic steel truck bumper. your cost argument is laughable.

Your point is made, understood and taken into account before it was ever mentioned by me.
But as I pointed out earlier, It’s about the money. Always the money, and we are on the loosing end. Because as is more often the case, someone has to lose something in order to gain something.

Even In multi billion $$ aircraft-carriers, there are compromises made to save it. But it comes back to bite, sooner or later

And you missed my point. "However, plastic is cheaper (not for you though)"

No way dude, with headrests, airbags, telescoping steering columns, CRUMPLE ZONES, modern cars are way safer. Yeah the classics are made of heavier steel and whatnot, but they aren't designed to strategically absorb crash energy.

The plastic was, and is a material that is inferior to metal, but originally it was not necessarily used to make a profit, but to save money.
As metal became very expensive many years ago, the engineers had no choice but to look at, or right out invent/redesign other materials to take its place.
They (engineers) were/are brilliant and saved the day. The profit that came from it was most likely unintended lagniappe, but very welcome now.
And plastic is not by any means safer imo.
    Hope that helps

Just the seat belts, collapsing steering wheel and crumple zones make a huge difference in safety. Some of these other technologies such as air bags are nothing more than hot air to make up for the weaker plastic materials. And some like air bags have proven to be lethal on their own.
All things being equal, If I have my seat belts, and collapsible steering wheel, my metal classic vehicle gives me much more comfort in my survival than a plastic air bag one.
