I painted the interior of my 07 Sport 4runner black using SEM color coat. It already had black seats due to it being a sport model but it turned out great! Will post pics later but I did my lower dash kick panel, glove box, door cards, console, rear panels, basically everything from the bottom of the windows down.

How is it holding up? That's my biggest concern with painting the interior. I would like to keep this truck for a longtime so durability matters a lot. Also, did you spend a lot of time prepping and how did you prep it for paint? Any clear coat?

So far so good. Rubbing your shoe on it won’t take it off but if you took a screwdriver to it, it would come off. For prep I scrubbed with dish soap and a green scotchbrite pad (which also scuffed the surface). Then rinse and dry in the sun. I didn’t use the SEM adhesion promoter, just used Rustoleum adhesion promoter since it’s way cheaper. One coat of that and a handful of coats of SEM color coat. No clear coat on top.

    Any update on the interior?

Been slammed up with bicycle projects. Been nice and hot lately, maybe some time this week I can get around to at least tidying up the floor liner. Couple chips in high traffic areas on the console, particularly on the smooth plastic of the shift bezel. I'll probably just touch them up and see if it was just a couple spots poorly prepped, and if they still chip up, re-do them with a different adhesion promoter.

Well, about a year later and I figured I'd update.

Definitely chipping/marring on the high traffic areas. They look like they would be easy enough to touch up, and I probably will when I gut out the factory inverter to put in a DC power center. I think if you were not using your truck as hard as I am, it would be fine, but if you're tossing heavy/odd shit in through the door, dragging stuff across the console, and stuffing the passenger floor and seat with gear on a regular basis, it won't look great forever. Better off finding some factory black interior pieces or living with the grey.

Thanks for posting this update. SEM puts out quality products, but at the end of the day it is just paint on plastic. Yours looked great. My biggest concerns is using the truck for truck stuff, like you mentioned. Only reason I never pulled the trigger.

Guess I'll just spruce up the door pulls and door card armrests with some accent pleather/leather and call it a day. Have black Clazzios to match like you started with, and I'm finally getting to interior mod focus time too.

I'm considering wrapping the console body in black vinyl (not the self-adhesive "wrap" stuff, actual upholstery vinyl) and sourcing a black shifter bezel from a 12-15. I'll update if I do.

Picked up a 2.5gen surround and climate control for cheap. Did some microsurgery to make the faceplate off the climate control to make it fit my existing - the top tabs don't line up so I got after them with a scalpel and swearing until they did. I wanted to keep the silver knob surrounds to match the hazard.

That seems like a lot of work when you can just order all of the console parts in black. Photo below of my new console parts for a project I have going on.

Buddy you're not gonna believe it. I have a black console sitting in my garage waiting for me to reupholster the dog deck. That SEM did not hold up to Truck Stuff, so not only was it a lot of work, it cost money and the result wasn't good enough.

I'll post some pics and an update on the SEM when I get there.

Yeah, SEM is ok for trim that isn't coming into contact a lot with other objects but I would never use it for lower trim like console or door panels. Maybe like an upper console on the roof or around the instrument gauges is ok for SEM stuff.
