Lately I have been thinking about overhauling the interior of my 97 access cab. I have been wishing it was a double cab lately, so the most important thing I want to do is to remove the back seat and add a single seat that runs perpendicular to the truck. This would make it more comfortable for the third passenger. I also think the current seats are a little uncomfortable. The lumbar is really shallow and I have to put a pillow behind my back for long trips. I'm looking for some after market seats to replace the current front seats with. In a perfect world, all seats would be leather or pleather. I think seats on an adventure vehicle should be impermeable one way or the other. I would also like to ditch the carpet in favor of vinyl. Has anyone else done anything like this? Any advice or ideas for after market seats?

I don't know that you could really do anything to improve the comfort for anyone sitting the back seat on account of the seat back angle being perfectly straight and the little leg room and almost requires sitting in the fetal position. I have relegated my back seat on my access cab to being only used for interior storage.

As for the front seats, does your driver side have a little lever on the side of the seat? On mine, that moves a piece of hard plastic to extend the lumbar region more forward. I have also seen someone take the seats out of a later year Tacoma and install them. As seats get older, the foam collapses and loses its springiness.

I had a 98 with no lumbar support and now I have an 01 with lumbar support. You could try to replace your seats with the 01-04 year seats.
