definetly has a cooling issue of some sort, I was just driving mine and its 100 degrees out, the temperature gauge needle is centered perfect and the AC is blowing cold, although im not at a stand still in traffic, which is a big issue for the OPs situation im sure it contributing to the running hot problem.

I was told by the tech who looks after my Tacoma that there is a TSB dated July 19th 2018 for this particular problem. T-SB-0063-18. "Lack of A/C Performance at Idle in High Ambient Temperature"

Again there seems like 2 separate issues here and people are combining them. The AC not cooling at a rest is well documented in the last 2 generations of Tacoma's.
The temp needle climbing is interesting though, but if the air temp was 100, the air around the truck would be much higher. After hours of idling, I can see what op described as being pretty normal. The truck never overheated. Op took his truck to the dealer, so maybe something is wrong, I'm not even saying it's not, but I can see the conditions op described as happening in the right conditions.

Just to be fair, I didn't let it. Once the needle was about to hit red, I turned everything off until I moved again.

I'm just making the argument that it sounds like there are 2 separate issues going on and you found yourself in the perfect storm that could result in the exact scenario you described.

Poster up above posted about a tsb for the lack of cooling situation you encountered. Hopefully your dealer addresses that for you. As for the truck overheating, my original vote was for a bad fan clutch.

Ah yea, happened at the perfect moment too. Hot day, all freeways and roads at a stand still because someone flipped their trailer. 3 hours of sitting in my hot truck around some of the people I least want to be around.

I got stuck in West Virginia on the highway in August of 08 heading to the new river to go white water kayaking and rafting. We were stuck for something like 10 hours. We were there so long we unpacked our camping gear and grilled out on the highway.
I highly suggest a bug out bag in your taco containing some hot dogs and a grill.

That's why I'm always looking for MREs. I store a couple in the rear storage under the seat for days like that. May start packing a few other things as well after experiencing yesterday. Not used to that. Driving 3 hours is one thing. Being held hostage by your vehicle when traffic isnt moving is another.

it will be interesting to find out what the ultimate verdict will be from the Dealer on the issue, I would bet a thermostat or a low coolant issue, they will probably replace the thermo stat, maybe the water pump just to on the safe side, unless they can directly pinpoint the issue.

Do you have a link to this TSB by chance. I can't find it anywhere.

I wonder what the "additional cooling kit" is.

Funny, I was actually picturing a 5 ton home condenser ratchet strapped to the bed.
