I've been having a weird problem as of late, that affects the starting of the vehicle as well as the transmission gear selection. My Tacoma is a 2005 4.0L V6 with the 5 speed auto.

I seem to be having a problem with my shifter or gear selector. Sometimes the truck won't start because it does not think it is in Park. Sometimes shifting to neutral will allow it to start, sometimes not. Sometimes when shifting from park into drive there will be a lag before the truck goes into gear. Sometimes it doesn't go into gear at all, I have to reposition the shifter or fiddle with it a bit. While this is happening the shifter may be in the drive position, but the "D" light in the dashboard isn't illuminated. Happens with neutral and park sometimes too. The shifter is in position but the appropriate light in the dash doesn't illuminate.

Has anyone else experienced this? Obviously there is a maladjustment between the shifter mechanism and the electronics controlling the transmission. I'm just wondering what I have to sync, and the procedure to do it.

    Thanks y'all...

Did you find a solution to this problem? A guy I work with just recently had the same problem, his is a 2005 model as well.

I adjusted the neutral safety switch and this far everything has been great.
