Finally rained around Northern California this weekend. Used my intermittent wipers for the first time since getting the truck this summer. I noticed that no matter what speed setting you put them on in the internittent mode, there is a barely audible "tick" sound when the wipers lift up across the window on their upswing, and then another "tick" sound when the finish their down swing and come back to rest. It is a very slight sound, but noticeable if you have the radio off.

Is this normal for other Tacomas with intermittent wipers or Toyotas in general? Or was I the special one that got this "tick" sound feature? I have never noticed this on any of my other vehicles. Just curious. :)

note: in all other normal speed setting for the wipers there is no ticking sound when they start and stop.

What you might be hearing is the circuit opening/closing in the relay. If you don't hear it when the radio is on, I would suspect that might be what it is.

Thanks for your response. I can actually still hear it when the radio is on if I try to listen for it, just the radio typically drownds it out.

So I take it you have never noticed this ticking sound?

Not on my truck, but in some of my other vehicles I've owned I have. If you have any concerns, I would turn off the radio, turn on the wipers and see where the sound is coming from.

    probably just the relay contacts.
wouldn't be too concerned with it.

How did you hear that between the rain on the truck and road noise?

LOL Yeah your right I can't hear it above the radio and most of the road noise. I was just curious as I noticed it this weekend when I had the radio off as my kid was sleeping in the truck on the way home. I had never heard it in any other vehicle i had so I was just wondering what it was. Sounds like relay contacts as you and the other poster described. Appreciate the feedback.

Not uncommon. I can hear it on my parents Subaru usually.

turned on my wipers today, no tick. i would turn on the wipers with truck in park and get out and get your head down near the pedals where the fuse and block for the relays are. listen if the tick is coming from there if so then i would identify the relay/timer and get it replaced......

Did you use the intermittent setting? Just making sure because you didn't state whether you did or not. I don't get the faint ticking sound in all other wiper speed positions, just in intermittent setting.

When I take it in for the 5k check up I will have them take a look. Sounds like a relay to me as you and others have stated.

Noticed the clicking tonight on my way home, first time hearing it. Glad I'm not crazy. Bought my truck 2 weeks ago trdorlb. First heard the click when radio was off, now I can hear it with the radio on. Has anyone figured out a fix?

Yup, mine do it. I just turn that left knob on the radio further to the right and keep on trucking.

Thanks for the feedback. Been awhile since I started this thread. Good for my sanity to hear others have this also. I did have my dealer look at this and they said the wipers are working as they are supposed to. I guess the ticking noise on the intermittent setting. is normal according to my dealer.

That's a bummer never had a wipers make a click noise in the 10 vehicles I've owned. Guess I need to blast the music when it rains!

Yeah I agree. This is the first vehicle I have ever had that I can hear the relays on. That is why I originally asked the question on this thread as this is my first Toyota and didn't know if this was normal or not. Sounds like via feed back from you and others it is.

Time to turn the radio up higher. Lol

Old school method was to wrap the relay with an insulator tape . Some of those relays within the cab can be very noisy

Thank you for this thread, thought something was wrong with my wipers. It's a very annoying little tink noise.

Interesting enough...I had a 2018 that did not make this tick but just got ‘21 same truck and it’s making the noise. Less than 700mi...hasn’t rained since I got it so just noticed it last night. Now that I’ve heard it, I can’t unhear it. Hoping there’s a fix

Mine does not tick, and I’m not going out there to verify either. Every time someone here would post something weird or strange about their truck, there I’d go.

Well, not no more, I’m done here.

Besides, my truck is all out of any warranties and I’m on my own again so the less I know, the better I
    ll sleep.
