My problem is camera and birding gear... shit's heavy and bulky! I probably would've been fine with just a medium day pack (30L) for the two weeks in Panama but adding in three lenses for my dslr, binocs, and a bird guide book required an extra bag.
The nice thing about that, though, was being able to bring back a greater-than-3oz fluid by just checking the second bag on the way home.

A separate camera bag is nice when you have a whole kit ha. Especially those long tele lenses.

I also bring an extra bag (Patagonia Lightweight Travel Courier 15L) inside my backpack so I can bring extra goodies back if I want to :D

How do you guys all research what you want to do at your travel destinations? Any good websites? I usually use lonely planet travel books.

That's what I've been using, too, and I think they've been great. Otherwise just google and see what comes up for little stuff and also a lot of word-of-mouth.

I've never tried a lonely planet book but hear decent things. I usually have a combination of looking at various minimalist travel blogs, winging it, and asking locals or other travelers veteran to that area.

we took a trip to asia this past summer, had an awesome time. it was hot as hell but we had a lot of fun.

    1. Sugar Land, Tx to San Diego. did one day there at legoland my 11 year old had a blast. we originally had purchased tickets to do the water park there but when we arrived in june it was in the low 50's:eek:

    2. the following day we drove from carlsbad to los Angeles ( awesome drive btw) did the touristy thing in LA had local food.

    3. the next day took a flight from los angeles (lax) to seoul south korea (icn) we had one day in seoul went to myeongdong and did the local stuff, didn't have much time there but had some delicious local cuisine.

    4. our next destination was from seoul (icn) to Hong Kong. once we arrived there we took the train to Guangzhou china. stayed there for 3 days. that is an awesome city with delicious local cuisine.

    5. from there we took the guangzhou train straight to Macau for some vegas style gambling had 2 days there, which we had more time. we really enjoyed going to old macau and see the portugese architecture. a must try is their local egg tart.

    6. After we did Macau we took the hydrofoil back to hong kong where we stayed for 3 days. Hong Kong is awesome love the local street side eateries. and not to mention their dim sum. did most of the local attractions, really miss HK.

    7. after that we flew back to seoul which we had a loooong lay over at the airport. we really didn't mind having a long layover in Incheon because there is so much to do and eat there, awaiting our long flight back to texas.

Anyone know of websites to use to book flights for Bali? I just been looking on google, expedia, and priceline. was wondering if there is possibly a site that specializes in flights for Southeast Asia.

I use matrix.itasoftware.com to search for all my flights supplemented by things like skyscanner, momondo, hopper, etc. Plus certain airlines actual websites. I know American Airlines had some pretty good prices to SE Asia last I checked.

Definitely check out the matrix. Never search for flights without it!

I was just looking at that matrix from TheFlightDeal. Looking to see if I can find flights from Lax to Bali, then Bali to Bangkok. from Bangkok I plan to travel by train to Angkor wat then to Vietnam and fly back to lax from there. Hoping to get flights for less than 1k total.

    When do you leave by?

Right now you can get quite a few flight points with cards.

I'm recommending the Chase Saphire and Chase Freedom cards right now.

Nearly free flights are nice, but take a little while to build up the points for.

Well three months is long enough to get points, but I don't know if you want to dive into that too quickly ha. Make sure to post trip reports for sure!

Hahaha yea. I don't think I want to open up another CC quite yet. Good news is that I found flights from Denpasar, Bali to Bangkok for about $60. So now just need to find the other flights.

I work for one of the largest travel companies in the world so I get a lot of benefits and travel a lot because of this.

International Trips I have done in the last 12 months:

    Kenya
    US Virgin Islands
    Bali
    Vietnam
    Costa Rica

    Domestic Trips:

    Southern Colorado
Southern Utah (National parks and BLM)
    Southern California
    All over Arizona

    Upcoming trips:

    Maldives in 3 weeks
    Tanzania / Kilimanjaro - August
South America (Peru or Argentina) Fall/Winter
Hoping to hit a few national parks this year

My go-to bag is a Medium The North Face Base Camp duffle. That thing goes everywhere with me. Can easily pack it for 10 day trips and a few other things. It fits in all over-head bins, more or less waterproof and has backpack straps. I also always have a small Mammut Neon Element backpack

Great to see others on here out an about traveling! :D

I have a 12 hour overnight layover in Abu Dhabi coming up. Anyone know if it's worth leaving the airport and exploring or is everything going to be closed?
