My Girlfriend will be working from home soon, and we need to get an Internet connection.
Due to the location of my house I CAN NOT get Internet from a regular company.

She can do the (hot spot) on her phone. But I'd like to get something with different.
She is doing data entry and Skpe And we dont want her hot spot to run out or start slowing down.

Is there a USB divice we can pay for monthly to get internet at home for her?

Too poor to list anything interesting.
Have you also looked at satellite internet, compared to regular line/fiber companies?

We have looked at Hughes net. But everyone says they are to expensive.

We do have Dish network for our TV. I'll bug them and see how much that would be

Cradlepoint cellular routers (depending on cellular service) are good for remote sites, if you can afford one. They are a bit pricey though ($500-700). However they have great antennas and can usually pull a signal where a normal phone/hotspot can't.

I used satellite internet for a while. If it is your only choice, it is ok. The advertising is misleading. High speed downloads are ok, but uploads are slow. Don't know how that works with phone on the internet.

Make sure your applications will play nice with satellite internet.

Almost all satellite systems have a latency of from .5 to 1.5 seconds which can wreak havoc with online gaming, Skype, and some VPNs.

There are more steps between your computer and the internet with a satellite system which is where the delay comes from.

Try it before you buy it if possible.

I have a Verizon Jetpack through work, seems to work great as long as there's cell service. Maybe there's an unlimited plan you can get for that? Although I'm sure it'd be $100+ per month.

If the data entry source is downloaded to your computer, entry records created, then batched and transferred back you should be just fine with slow latency. If you are entering data on a server directly with your computer acting like a thin client, then you might have noticeable slowness or failure. The company you enter for should know if it works and the minimum specs are. Good luck.

Edit: I thought a little more on this. You will be doing medical transcription and billing. HIPPA has some tight policies on where data resides at rest. I would be surprised if they let un-encrypted (or even encrypted) data sit on a personally owned computer. They may have to give you one of their managed computers to do data entry. You won't be able to use it for personal use.

My wife and I are in a similar position except that neither of us work from home. We have no wired ISPs available, only cellular or satellite available. We have Verizon 4G cell phones with mobile hotspot enabled on both lines, but due to the no-wired-ISP issue in this area, the local tower gets overloaded at night starting around 5 p.m.. If your wife works during the day, she can probably use VPN and Skype via 4G without much of an issue, but during high traffic times DL/UL speeds will probably drop to nothing. We usually see around 1-4 Mbps during the day, then it drops to a worthless 50-100 Kbps after 5 p.m until around midnight or so. We have Verizon's unlimited plan, and they throttle hotspot speeds after 15 GB of usage to no higher than 600 Kbps. I am pretty sure this applies to the jetpacks too.

My Uncle said him and my aunt just used their Cell phones for internet.
and that has been fine for me for 6 years but with my girl friend working from home. I dont think her Phone is going to cut it.
We have Metro PCS its 60$ a month for her phone a and hot spot. We have Dish network I'm going to call them tonight and see what they have.

    Pic of my chicken coop.

I pay over $110 a month for DISH WiFi and TV with direct pay. No cell phone, service has been good, occasional small hiccup for TV. Storms here in the mountains affect my WiFi speed/reception and it isn't raining or snowing hard.

we have dish but its getting expensive and downloads is limited. Snow here hampers the dish also, so if it snows a lot i have to go out and scrape the dish every once in a while.

    We Got Hugsnet installed Sunday.

She ran a test from her work and the best she can get is 18mbps, NOT the 25mbps as they say on the website. its looking like its not going to work for her.
Now shes on the phone trying to see why its so slow, The wrost part is it's a two year contract.

If they guarantee 25 and you're only getting 18, they are in violation of the contract so you can back out.

Skype only needs 1.2 Mbps up/down for HD video calling according to their website. Why won't it work? I am just curious, is it because it has to go through VPN?
