    Hey all,
I've been going through Tacoma World for a while now and I've been looking for various ways to restore and maintain Dad's prized 2000 Toy Taco.
When he drove it, it made a slight sqealing sound from the right rear. He turned it over to me when his health declined and I've had it every since. The squeal stopped after I started driving it. However, it has returned with a vengeance more than four years after his passing. The sqeal comes and goes but when it does make noise, it does it when I breathe the throttle and when I am coasting, whether the clutch is pressed in or not. It does stop under moderate to heavy acceleration and moderate to heavy braking and returns when I lift off the brake. In everyone's experiences, could there be an issue with the drum brakes? Thanks all, I'll take all the help and input I can get.

It's easy enough to pull the brake drum and check things out. It could be anything from a rock that got inside the drum to metal to metal shoe backing scraping the drum. Better to check sooner rather than later...

Thanks for the quick return on my inquiry Travlr. I took it and had it checked out a little while ago. They said it had carbon build up inside. They "told" me they cleaned it out. It helped for a while but it wasn't long before it returned. I'm wondering if there could be a small part that has broken causing the metal to metal sqealing sound.

To Travlr and anyone with rear end squeal.
A fishing buddy had a look at my brakes to see if he could find the problem. He is a good mechanic and even he was puzzled with the particular behavior of the metal on metal sounds. After he eliminated the brakes as the problem, he went through the entire back end of the truck with a grease gun and came to the conclusion the problem was a dry u-joint. Even so, he said the behavior and manner of the squeal was more consistant with a problem in the back plate on the brake. Hope this helps others with this issue.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
    So the squeal is gone?

    I can`t say I ever heard a bad u-joint squeal.

So far the squeak and squeal is gone. I'll wait and see how it does for a few weeks before I say it's gone for sure, but the silence is music to my ears. By the way, the joint wasn't bad it was just dry. That's something else I'll keep and eye on.
