Anyone ever have this issue? When the truck starts up most days the head unit colors come up inverted... usually goes away after 5-10 minutes, but it's pretty annoying. Assuming this thing is just dying, but wanted to ask before I rip it out and install an aftermarket unit.

I just got a 2013 reg cab 2wd and it has the same issue. Seems to be based off temp for me. On the base model that stereo does not get louder than a conversation so that was the first thing to get pulled out. Sorry I don't have any better info for you but I can confirm you are not the only one to see this.

This is the only thread on the net I've found about this problem - same thing happens to my '13 tacoma OEM unit. Took the truck to the stealership for the frame corrosion customer service campaign and asked them to take a look... Well they said it probably just needs to be replaced but, son of a bitch, now it is happening EVERY day instead of a couple times a month. And whereas it used to happen only on a cold-start in the AM, it will now happen in the afternoon after the engine's been off for only about 8 hours, so I am pretty pissed and regret mentioning it.

I feel like it might be a wiring issue. I have this other problem with the fan blower - for long periods of time the cabin AC/heat blower will only operate on full blast... discovered that the one of the pins on the blower motor 4-pin connector has soot on it from arcing current, or something, and that if you jostle the connector housing you can get better contact and the blower will run on all settings. Thinking that there are some issues with the wiring harness connection points that aren't engineered perfectly - in the case of the blower motor it seems apparent from what I've read that the connector they used isn't sufficient for the voltage and people have fixed it by splicing on a different connector... I'm thinking that the service tech jostled the wiring harness around a bit on my head unit and made the problem worse, but perhaps the right jostle can fix it...

Anyway when I ran into the blower motor issue I wanted to get a replacement wire for that one section and was told that the wiring harness is one single part, not a bunch of individual cables (I have more experience building PCs than cars so this was interesting to me). Maybe if I could access the back of the head unit I could re-seat all the connectors and that would help, because I don't think the stereo is shot, that wouldn't make much sense.

Anyway I'll update if I find a fix. Considering it's a chronic problem now instead of an irregular problem I am more motivated to get something done. God damn dealership...

It is, but usually internal in the radio. The screen's ribbon cables probably need to be reseated.

I read some of this. The LCD assembly has what's called a zebra stripe ribbon connector. Literally like an old game boy. Temp will expect and contract any metals, including the contact pads on the ribbon cable. The fix would be to replace the head unit, or take it to an electornics/TV repair shop that don't exist anymore, re-flow the contact pads so they keep pressure on the board. This clearly gets out of scopes quick. Try owning a SAAB.
