Does anyone know if you can make a gopro into a dash cam? I have one that i honestly don't use for anything and can't find much info on converting it to one..just bought it a few years ago when i would surf, fish etc but really haven't touch it in a while.

Glad to find this thread. Been casually considering a dash cam for a few years now. Definitely not interested in spending too much, <$150. Still unsure which unit to go with or what features I want/need.

Anyone have experience running a rear cam with a camper shell?

@da_crew10 looks like your post actually answered my topper question. Did you buy that particular camera set you linked? Likes dislikes?

Am I reading the listing correct that this is a front and rear camera set for $100?

I am a huge believer in dash cams, after what I experienced.

Last year I was driving my Wrangler home from work and a guy coming from the other direction cut me off, made a sudden left in front of me. I hit him in the rear with my front passenger side.

The guy was very apologetic at the scene, but I didn't say much. I knew I had my dash cam on, so everything was on "tape". I felt safe.

I got home, plugged in my dash cam... and nothing... No @#$ing recording whatsoever, although the cam was on! I had no recording of the event!

Of course the guy said I ran a red light. Right... The guy's driving record was shady, while mine was clean for all the years I've been driving, but in this case, it was his word against mine. Fortunately, my insurance paid my $5k damage without raising my premium.

That's when I learned an important lesson: the card used inside the dash cam is just as important, if not more important than the cam! The problem was not the cam, but the card.

Regular, cheap cards will work, but can also crap out. It's a lottery with them. Improve your odds, use a card made for "high endurance applications". Now I use this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00V5Q1N1I/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I put that card in the same dash cam, and it worked flawlessly ever since. I check the recordings regularly, I look at the time stamps and make sure it doesn't skip anything.

Yep, the key is to check the recordings regularly. Never seen a dashcam yet that tells you if it's not recording. Trust but verify.

Definitely! Dash cams are not "set and forget".

So I'm sorry if I'm misinterpreting your reasoning behind quoting my post but are you suggesting it was possible for me to have NOT been hit by that lady if I had "driven better"...?

Yes. You said you had been thinking about it and could not see how you could have avoided it other than maybe having a supercharged truck and accelerating.

    I offered an alternative viewpoint.
