Dave Ramsey's logic is a bit sophomoric for me. Yes if you aren't a numbers person then do what he says. I look at numbers all day for my job, I went to business school and learned all about marketing tactics, it's not a problem for me. He thinks his own experiences should apply to everyone, he's scared of debt because he went bankrupt and he's only ever worked in one industry. Seems a bit silly to me but :notsure:

I don't have debt, I went to college on full scholarship, and I have one single card that I fully pay off. I wouldn't be able to get a mortgage without credit. Yes it's a stupid game, but you have to play it. I try to live a minimalism life, don't subscribe to consumerism. Mindless purchasing under the impression that your life will magically improve is ridiculous notion that has brainwashed millions by decades of advertising and consumer behavior analysis.

If something breaks, I try to fix it first - if it's not cost effective to fix, buy something that is equal to thing that broke. For instance my TV stopped working, it was a 40". I stripped the parts and am selling on eBay, well at least the valuable parts that are cheap to ship. Bought a 43" TV to replace it. Sad that TVs dont even last 7 years anymore, but I guess they have gotten cheaper. Same reason I still have my truck since high school, far cheaper to maintain than to buy new. If I want to buy something new, I sell the old stuff first. Am I going to commit to the new thing? Will I use it often? These are questions I ask myself.

I sometimes am visiting people and all I see is junk they haven't used nor looked at in years. If you don't use it, sell it or get rid of it. It's really crazy how much crap people accumulate, multiples of an item that all accomplish the same task. I feel like I have too much stuff but then I look around and I realize I'm far from the norm. I try to view my life as business, it has expenses but I can mitigate those expenses with sales or other income streams outside of my day job, especially with consumer purchases. Hell, I've made about $2500 over the last year just selling random crap on eBay that I realize "I haven't used this and won't miss it. Someone else would use it." So I list it on eBay and make some money. It's turning into a bit of a hobby for me. The IT Dept at my work was getting rid of "junk" and let everyone take whatever they wanted, I got a bunch of small high dollar items and I've made $700 so far. I like getting money from other places other than my monthly paycheck. It's not necessary, but it's fun for me to do at this point - not really sure why

I've pretty much thought everyone in this thread is really not a candidate for DR.

hmm.. so are we repeating October all over again? I'm ready to buy the dip this time.

First big correction (SPX) as of recent was Jan 2018 and was about 12%. Next one was in Oct 2018 and was ~20%. What will this one be? We are currently down 6% from the latest peak. I'm gonna say somewhere around 2440 (down 17% from latest peak)

Yield curve is getting more wonky.

It will be tough to call the bottom if that's what you want to do. It could be today, or it could be 2335, or it could be 2700, etc.

I have realized that I will never be able to do that (and don't think anyone else can either), so I focus on whether the specific stock is a good buy at the time. You have to have a long horizon of course to do that, but timing it right is probably pure luck if accomplished.

If you figure out how to call market lows and highs let us know so we can all retire and become billionaires.

Sometimes I beat myself up over a buy (should have waited!) then I realize that if I knew that I would be a billionaire.

eh, just calling a bottom for fun. Not really trying to actually do it lol. Just sitting back with popcorn and seeing when to inject some of this cash in.

I figured, but you know there are people right now waiting to go all-in when they think it's a bottom. I see the comments on Seeking Alpha all the time.

Yeah, I'm def not doing that. I don't like Seeking Alpha all that much. Too many people with vested interests on there.

I'll tell you this then, today would be a better day to buy than any in the last 3 months or so!

yeah, it's a good day.. but I'm gonna wait a bit longer. Especially with this insane volatility and the lack of confidence in a trade deal (plus the bond market going crazy)

Oil has been going berzerk today, down 6% earlier, now near 0%.. apparently flooding in the midwest could affect oil production and shipping and now Russia has moved up an OPEC meeting regarding oil cut extensions

You will probably be better off waiting, I think we're headed down some more.

The only think I'd note, I would try to be in at the time a trade deal is made (if one is ever made). The more we fall, the more I think we'll pop when that Tweet is made.

I still haven't realized I cant predict the market so I'll say the bottom will be 2230.
