@Boyk1182, at what point do you sell your dividend stocks.

I'm at 30% gain right now on SO which there's no downsides that I've saw in the news, do I sell take my gains and wait or just keep riding it out. The stock is at an all time high.

    Also thoughts on KHC?

My goal is to never sell, only add shares. I have 34 companies and my portfolio produces around 4.5% in dividends. It is also on par with the S&P and Dow in terms of capital gains this year.

I also have some stocks that are up a lot (TGT is up about 50% now, GIS is up about 25%, many others 10-15%). I see no reason to sell them unless I find a better place to put that money. I probably won't be adding to these until they drop, which of course they will (and then I'll buy with a higher yield).

I know my method probably won't be popular, most people would say sell and take gains. I do know that there are plenty of people who do as I do though too. Just think, at a 4.5% dividend yield, with a $1m portfolio, you would have a $45k/year income. I am not there yet, but see no reason I can't get there. Also think, while you're young and working, your portfolio can produce dividends of $500, then $1k, then $2k a month, etc. If you're reinvesting those dividends, it will just begin to snowball. You're then buying a lot of new shares, increasing the monthly income.

To put things into perspective, if it wasn't for dividends, I would not be in the stock market. I would use my money for properties that generate rental income. I am not looking for capital gains, just actual money that I can spend if I want to.

My goal is to have more than I need coming in through dividends so I don't have to worry about anything, and can keep reinvesting the extra even in retirement.

Edit: I have been watching KHC for a while. The thing is, even though I said I don't really care about capital gains, they have to happen for companies to increase their dividend every year. If the stock stays flat or goes down, they won't be raising dividends much. That is my fear with KHC, it is a dividend company, but not really a dividend growth company. I try to find companies that are both (capital gains not for me to take, but to show that the company is healthy and the dividend will grow). There are exceptions of course (mREITs for one) when the dividend is so high that they don't need gains, but KHC really needs organic growth to grow their dividend, which I don't know if they have right now.

I would also add that I am very overweight in consumer staples, so KHC would only make that worse. I have done it this way on purpose (low volatility, good dividend history, etc.), but I guess I just found a few other companies in that sector that I believe have better prospects.

With 5G around the corner, do you think AMT, SBAC and CCI are good buy and holds?

I have been wondering what is good for that as well. I have T, VZ, AAPL, and AVGO that I hope benefit from it. I think the REITs that have cell tower property might be good too, I just wonder if they do too well, and their price appreciates, it will drive the yield down. They might be a buy, hold for a while, and sell when they’re up from the hype. Looking at CSCO for a while too.

I may start building up a small position in those companies. Especially considering the sheer volume of towers needed to operate 5G.

Nothing ever came of that except a very short drop. I wonder if there's more to come with it.

I was down around 25-30% IIRC now sitting around 10-15% down.

Yeah, I just thought about the whistleblower and want to look up what’s going on with the guy

He seems to be credible if you look at what he has done in the past. He was hired by a hedge fund on this GE issue, which is a little suspicious. I remember his interview, he said that when he did the same thing with Enron and other companies, it was a few months after his report that the damage occurred. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I'll be selling as soon as i'm green.

If I would've bought bumped my share count on this drop I would've been more willing to hold.

UWT up 34% intraday so far. First time I've seen oil go up during market hours in a while. Usually it gaps up and then falls. Looks like investors are piling in.

had to be quick on the trigger this morning, a precipitous drop in oil after seeing on twitter that Saudi officials said oil output would back to 100% earlier than expected. Had to swing trade over to DWT.

Yesterday was the day to sell oil you could see it clearly. There is Always an overreaction to these events.

It’s been a few years since I’ve been in college but I remember we would go to a site and look at a company’s insider transactions. Do you guys have a good site where I can find this info?
