That is weird, I’ll admit I don’t know much about preferred stock. I was specifically talking about Chimera (CIM). I own the common stock, and noticed that all classes of preferred have a lower yield. I have thought about switching to the preferred for safety, but don’t want to lower my yield.

It might actually be more of a preferred stock ETF vs common stock ETF instead of a single preferred stock vs common stock. These are great examples of things to ask about since it doesn't seem straight forward. I think you can search around and find somebody saying something good and someone else saying something bad about the same stock/ETF/mutual fund etc. I'm more in the frame of mind of trying to make sure I don't lose 20% or more if things go south quickly. After losing 50% in 2008, I don't want to see that happen again.

Prior military folks: Anyone ever move a civilian 401k into their TSP and if so, how difficult was it? I know it is allowed, my wife is wanting to move her previous jobs funds into her TSP since it has much lower maintenance fees. She was losing $50/qtr on another job’s retirement account til she merged it into this last one (joys of a mil spouse, sometimes has to start over every few years and none of these like to use the same investment company)

She Would be better off to roll it into a ira at a low cost mutual fund company like vanguard. The fees would be much lower

Doesnt matter you can do a direct rollover into ira with no tax penalties. It would be more cost effective to leave the money there than to put it into a tsp where fees would be higher.

hmmmm....we have a Roth with vanguard, one for each of us. Looking at the Vanguard website, we may have to pay income taxes if we go that route. If it was a traditional IRA, we wouldn’t. Any ideas if it’s kosher to have both types? We are dual income without kids and with only a mortgage so everything pretty much goes to various retirement accounts/investing. I put about 1/3 my check into my own TSP. Almost maxing that annual limit out too...trying to get her to agree to start buying rental property haha

Yes you can have both, my wife and I have Roth iras, roll over iras and regular accounts all at vanguard. Yes you could put it in the Roth but as you said you would pay taxes to transition it from a 401k to a Roth.

What is the typical fee (s) at Vanguard ? .. for a direct rollover from a 401k (to regular ira account) I'm guessing it would vary and depend on what you invest in within the company ? (example 20% Bonds 30% M. Funds 25% EFTs 25% stocks)

There is no fee to rollover from vanguard except whatever fees the funds charge which are low but can vary from fund to fund. Your 401k may charge some type of fee. I have only rolled over 401ks when I changed jobs. Always into my vanguard ira.

Gotcha ..in my example pie it's probably close to 1% which seems standard. Just didn't know if Vanguard had a set rate. My current 401k is .42%

I saw that, but thought it may have had to do with the price of a share (share price rises, yield drops, like with all bonds). Was it an actual cut?
