As long as goods keep getting shipped and stuff keeps getting built we will be fine regardless of what the market does. The market is disconnected from the actual money exchanged for goods and services "real" economy. If that slows or stops it will be rough.

I can't wait to see what is next, in a few months, after the virus is gone. We should try to predict the next "crisis" on this thread.

There is a simple option if you want to invest and sleep well at night without stress.

Invest as much as you can, and ignore daily, weekly, monthly, yearly prices. Trust the process!

With free trades these days, I'd just pick one of the bigger companies that you like. I'd only suggest being careful with Robinhood, they have had a lot of issues lately. The bigger firms seem to work well.

Index funds and dont watch your portfolio. Have cash ready to buy on dips. My grandpa explained this to me as a kid (he started an investment company) and I was investing grass mowing money as a teenager. I bought a tow rig and trailer in college for my jeep while working part time and school full time using stock sales. Used stock sales for the down payment on my house, bought my wife's engagement ring with stock sales, paid off her student loans with stock sales, had cash on hand and was investing a few months after the 2008 bottom drop out of the market while working 30hr weeks due to the recession pumping gas into planes, quit my job recently after having a year of salary in investment capital saved up to start my own biz. Bought a pimp ass gazebo for my deck and them fenced my yard care of Elon musk and buying and selling tesla stock.

Basically keep putting money in, stay as debt free as possible, and delay gratification is the key to financial security. I'm a long term investor, that's really the key, dont be a day trader unless you really know what you are doing and thats you job. Open a 401k as soon as possible if you dont have one if your company has a match, it's free money.

    Disclaimer:
I'm not a financial advisor, just an idiot on the internet shareing my experience, your mileage may vary.

I like fidelity. The locations also have very helpful people with free advice and pretty much zero sales pressure if you already have an account with them.

This is key as well. In these times look at what people always buy and need and find out who makes it and buy that. Think food, consumer staples etc. Its boring stuff but you will always make money with them over time.

This is all solid advice. For some real world numbers, if you can afford a $50k truck, buy a $30k truck. If you can afford a $800k house, buy a $400k house. You have to stay below your means, buy income producing assets with the difference, and reap the rewards. Otherwise you're still a slave to labor with a nice house and fancy truck, but that's no way to live.

    Yup!!

I just reread my post and to also clarify I was making less than $20 an hour in a blue collar type service jobs up until 2012 when I got a professional management job. Just to put it into perspective, instead of buying a new car, invest, instead of going out to eat, save and make food at home and invest. Pays off in the end. You also need to have a spouse who's one same page. I married a saver which is nice and we are on the same page with that.

When times are good, people celebrate.
When times are rough, people medicate.

But yeah. Long term view. I've been in the market for 17 of the 29 entries in this table. https://www.fool.com/investing/2018/03/27/50-years-of-stock-market-corrections-and-the-1-fig.aspx

Stay the course, buy additional funds with cash on hand, don't focus on daily numbers. Losses don't "exist" until you sell.
