Ok guys, if you wound up with an extra $2k and wanted to invest for a short term (~6 month) return to try and make a quick buck while prices are still low, what would you snag tmw?

    ...NRGU :D

Probably one of the vanguard funds. They're going to come back up and that's the timeframe, depends if it's a real investment or Monopoly money. If it was a real investment I'd be playing it safe with VTI or similar.

I just have concerns over the next few days about oil glut...the reverse is NRGD....if you sell one...you buy the other...

It’s both lol. It’s money that I was going to put on the new dirt bike loan but I can easily afford the payments on the loan so it’s not the end of the world if I lose it all. I would be putting all profit directly on the new loan anyway.

Great question. 6 months might be the most difficult timeline to project

I know it sounds boring but stocks don't have interest. But your loan does.

I know that's not wholly true but you get the idea. Remove any interest possible. Especially on something other than a house or car.

And that's even without the virus :D

Woo! Yeah I think as it spreads and as people recover and as testing happens it'll be better.

The risk was really early on when nobody knew much about it. We knew a bit about the general family of a Corona virus. And to be fair those are some nasty shit and this one showed an accelerated spread. I think fear was warranted. I think now, caution is warranted alongside optimism and a look at the road out.

Stocks went on sale. They'll be on sale again sometime. But even still you don't have to buy something on sale for it to be a good buy. I'm going to drop more into NRGU this week and continue boring investments every month forever. Wonder how DCA models will reflect the market over the past few months.

It’s who writes it and how you read it. The cdc also lowered estimates to 500,000 American deaths if no social distancing measures are continued. So they can say whatever they want and it can be used in either side of the argument

That’s not even a drop in the bucket for a country of over 328 million people. And that’s very unlikely.

I agree it’s highly unlikely, but if it did happen I wouldn’t just brush it off as nothing. I’m not that cold. If it’s even 100,000 in less than 6 months, that’s a significant number to me. With that said, it’s time to move on, there are still great buys out there and some companies that should come out of this in great positions for growth. I’m just hoping I don’t get hit with any dividend cuts after the stock prices are back up. I prefer to jump ship to another strong div when the prices are still down. I’ll miss the active banter in here when the markets are just quietly going about their business though.

Ok...so I just pulled a "why not" with my 401k. One of the funds is banking heavy, UBVAX. It's the only major fund that hasn't rebounded yet. Pre-covid it was trading at $60-62...now it's at $39. Every other fund has recovered to within 10% of pre-covid (as has most of the non-financial sectors). With what I see as a prim opportunity...I took 50% of my 401K and rebalanced it into UBVAX. I figure if it recovers in the next 3 or 4 months I'll get a 1.5x return on 50% of my 401K if....WHEN ;) ...it gets back to $60/share...Then I'll rebalance.... fingers crossed!
One of the funds, FNITX barely registered a hit...that's Amazon, google, microsoft...
I didn't change any of my contribution choices, just this rebalance...

I wasn't going to mention this since it's a horrible idea unless you come out on the winning side. A lot of the trading I've done has been in my IRA. I took a 15% hit from the Covid drop. I was fine with that and knew it would recover eventually. Then I got laid off for 5 weeks. In those 5 weeks I sold every position in my IRA, except NVDA, and started trading options heavily. It's stupid but it worked well for me. As of Friday's close my IRA is up 178%. I plan on finishing this round of options and going back to long positions on stocks. I got lucky. YMMV.

Wow, I just checked my ROTH and I'm even for YTD.

My 401k is -7.7% and improving, but that is expected.

I'm not really too concerned. It's performed well over 5+ years. It looks like it has a solid dividend too...Maybe I'll hold until december and then rebalance...

Hey at the end of the day it’s your money and credit report, not mine. But I would be killing off interest. The less money I spend and give the bank for letting me use money, the better.
