Gonna be a bad day today, CPI data and retail sales were both just reported worse than expected.

not sure if the market is flipping the bird at the Fed or what... but I think the news outlets wanted a .1% difference from expected to be a bigger deal than it was

Could be. From the looks of it, it just feels like one big gamble at this point. Economic data points to a drop in the market, but the market sentiment seems to be the market goes up. You have economic data vs sentiment. I don’t know which one wins at this point.

To me, The Dow futures swung a -550 points at 8:30 am this morning on those reports, it tells me that the economic data was bad, it’s a fact. Otherwise it wouldn’t have swung that big like that. Then when the market opened and retail investors got in, they bought everything up , which doesn’t make sense.

I’m still on the sidelines as of right now waiting for the market to choose a real direction.

TVIX is down 12% today, so there's that. I would agree that market sentiment is running the show

Weeee! Off we go again! WPRT and CHK both up 4%. I'm setting a stop loss at 4.00 for both if/when they cross that threshold. long way to go

I maxed out my 401K contribution back in 08/09 when the market bottomed out. I had money going into small cap, mid cap and large cap funds. Some pay quarterly dividends, some pay yearly and some might not pay any or it could be a decent windfall. I stopped working 2-1/2 years ago but I'm too young to use any of the money without paying the 10% additional penalty so I've moved some of it into bond funds that pay a monthly dividend and preferred stock funds that pay a monthly dividend. The prices don't generally move around that much (the bond fund dropped about 2.5% the past couple of weeks but who cares since I won't be selling any of it any time soon and it will buy more shares with the monthly dividend) so the real benefit/gain is from the compounding monthly dividends. I'm looking for long term 7-8% gains from the dividends. It really depends on what kind of gains your looking for and then the risks involved with it. When the market crashed in 08/09, I lost 50% of what was in my 401K but that was really out of my hands. I'm glad I maxed out my contribution from that point on. Always try to max out what your company will match (as long as you can afford to do it).

I’m still skeptical, it that’s just me. I just try to minimize risk, even if it means sacrificing profits........ although things may be back to normal

Can you guess where we are right now?

What are your expenses for buying into these stock funds and what is your dividend %. You could possibly do better buying stocks that pay anywhere from 5 to 13%.

Yeah the oil and gas stocks movement is weird. Oil has gone up over the past week, yet all the oil and gas stocks have dropped, even companies that just reported excellent earnings and forecasts dropped. Seems like something is going on in the background.....
