I like that. Still don’t know who is buying at 40, but I like the logic. If it’s good to go on a nice vacation, oil must be up, and the companies doing better than now.

well, and travel is permitted etc.

I only have (now) 160 shares. At 40 people will be buying for the 40 to 50 climb.

Be so much easier to sell 1000 shares at 6.50
I can’t though. If it seems to easy and obvious, it’s gotta be a trap

If I think it’ll be getting to 40 then I should have the confidence it will get to 6.50 and a lot sooner than 40. But. This is monopoly. I could see at 6.70 and make about 300 I have 161 shares at 4.70xx so. I can make a decent gain short term but the goal is a sweet vacation in about a year. We’ll see. I could also bail at 10 and have more Monopoly monies fun. There are a few shares I’d love to grab at 0.01 or less and have a thousand of them for 10 bucks. Just for fun.

I’m sitting on 305 shares atm. It had better get to $40 or I will be writing you a very stern letter.

You would also be re-investing that 4%. Look at it this way.

You have an average of 5% div returns. You start with $100000. After a year you have $105000.

I start with $100000. I don't have div stocks but get an average return of 5% a year. After a year I also have $105000.

If your underlying assets stayed the same it's a break even. If your underlying assets retracted in value I made more. If your underlying assets grew in value you made more.

You can extrapolate that for 30 years and the results don't change. It's all about % of gain or loss.

I get that, but I could spontaneously retire whenever I want if my dividend income covers my expenses. You could do that too on capital gains, but you might be forced to sell at a 40% correction. That’s my goal, to avoid selling. I’ll gladly underperform the market if my income is stable.

It's a worthy goal. I will be completely out of the market when I retire. I've got no kids so having the cash to blow is gonna be sweet. My goal is to time it perfectly and die owing nothing and having nothing. lol

I want to pass on a dividend portfolio to some random severely wounded veteran that I meet in 45 years, so my motivation is different. I am trying very hard to not touch the principal. It’s an odd goal but I think it will be awesome if I’m able to do it.

yeah but did you get in at 7.50 or 4.25? :D

    I’ll take your letter.

But if there is that much of a correction there is also a chance of a dividend reduction or cut, too. I think it was you that had that happen with F?

have you considered health care and etc? Health care costs are a lot cheaper when the company covers them. Unless. I can’t remember are you under VA healthcare? I’m on my phone now so it doesn’t show the insignia.

I think it’s a fantastic goal. And it makes a lot of sense, and it’s not really odd. That’s how trust’s work, the principal sits there and they operate off the dividend or investment gains, without touching the principal. It’s a partial goal for me and I’ll consider that going forward with investing, my boring account, a mix of boring funds VTI etc, and dividend yielding securities. I’ll probably start with a budget/list of recurring expenses and as I tend toward how much dividend yield I get each month, check them off little by little until I’m pretty much subsisting off the dividends and can do whatever I want for work, part time, take a year off, etc. But I’ll also be aiming toward paying off our house and having no debts either. o_O so this might take a while.

I didn’t make it up, a Vietnam veteran that I know did something similar. He was highly decorated, a real bad ass. He probably accumulated millions from our conversations. He told me there was a barista at Starbucks that he saw busting her ass, everyday. He said he was going to pull her aside one day and tell her he’d pay for her college. I thought it was an awesome idea. Sometimes even better than giving something like that to your own kids, because I have seen that mess up people’s lives, never having to work.

I know the nieces and nephews n my side of the family aren't worth shit. I could never imagine leaving them a thing. They never had to work for a thing and it shows. It's a shame.

I didn’t see this part of your post when I responded before.

Dividends can get cut during recessions, but it’s usually temporary and a lot less than the price drop of the stocks. Here is some history on that:

I do have free healthcare through the VA, that is probably why my goals are even possible. I work, but decline healthcare and I guess I make a little more that way. The VA where I live is awesome, better than what I remember from private healthcare, but that’s probably not always the case.

no kids here, a few nieces/nephews. ideally we want to have enough to live comfortably without the goal of leaving anything major to anyone...but, we have in our wills taht if we do go early, most everyhting is to those kids college expenses.

yeah, I mean if stocks don’t cut their dividends too bad, heck just aim for 1.1% of your goal and you’ll be all set realistically.

I can tell you’ve done a lot of research on this, it’s cool to see. And hey I may even end up there. My company doesn’t give a stipend if you decline healthcare though they just pocket the money. Im only 27 military hasn’t been ruled out for me yet. We’ll see how the rest of this year and next goes.
