I don't have enough cash to park to throw into dips as I'm still not quite where I want to be with emergency savings. Just about all I can do is increase my retirement contribution which goes in at the beginning of the month.

I don’t have cash to wait for dips either. I mean if you’re buying regularly, and have a long window (10 years at least) these dips should help. I buy a few times a month as I get paid, and will do so regardless of price (dollar cost averaging I guess). I just think keeping on buying while ignoring the daily or monthly fluctuations should do you well if you sit tight and don’t sell for a few years at least.

Edit: This all includes doing your homework and buying quality stocks at fair prices. If you overpay, you’ll probably lose, regardless of timeframe.

I know what ya mean, I really would like to do that, but in my brain I always think I need to either put more in during dips to average down faster (raise my % contribution rate), or move it into bonds until things settle. The market this year has been nothing short of a roller coaster, so it's too difficult to try to time ins and outs.

Time in the market > timing the market

I thinks that’s the old saying.

Don’t get me wrong, losing $5k+ in a day is painful to watch, but I am sticking to my plan. Only time will tell if it’s a good one!

I know, I just think that's a really broad strategy for folks who don't care much about the market. But if you're looking into all the moving parts (fed interest rates, inflated P/E, trade wars, blue wave, yield curve, stock buybacks) then I want to say we have a better idea of what is to come than most normal people

Yea but that’s all short-term noise if you’re willing to stay the course. The strangest things affect the market one day (i.e. some random crisis with Turkish money), then a few days later it’s recovered as if it never happened. I think business fundamentals win out over the long-term every time.

One other thing, it sure helps to sit back and not sell if you’re getting paid dividends while the market does its thing!

The dividends in VIIIX aren't that great, maybe a hair above 2%

That’s not horrible. Not the best but decent (in my opinion).

I'm torn between buying CHK or SQ if the dip is good enough.

Based on fundamentals and growth, I like SQ a lot. I don’t plan to buy it, but I’m sure I’ll wish I did in a few years.

considering SQ was touching 100 and is now at 70 I think it's a good buy, I think in the 60s would be a nice place to get in.

I would agree. I have seen valuations all over the place for that company, but if it settles in the $60s it’ll probably go up from there. Tough to say after what ALGN did today as it was “corrected.”

that's an interesting stock, a lot of down days recently, might snap back the other direction if other factors help.. p/e of 66 though... seems like the story these days

P/E dropped from around 80 to 58 in this decline. I think it’s a great company dominating its market, but still an overpriced stock.

another selloff, looks like GDP beat wasn't enough to stop the market from tanking from Alphabet and Amazon disappointments. #shortamazon

I go up one day, down the next, up, down, up.. it is like clockwork, in the end I’m at about the same value as when this started a few weeks ago. It’s crazy, never 2 up or 2 down days in a row even.
