I felt the exact same. Figured I’d try something new and could always go back. I also have a 4Runner so it helped me get rid of the Tacoma

Sorry, I didn't see this edit until someone quoted it. Both of your examples would be wash sales so you couldn't claim losses on taxes. I think there is a way around the first one though, but I haven't tired it. In my broker (Merrill), you can actually select which shares you want to sell. I never do, if I sell, it's usually all of them. I would imagine that under scenario 1, you had 100 shares for a while, bought 25 more to average down, you might be able to avoid the wash sale if you specifically sell shares that weren't bought in that recent purchase of 25 (so you only sold old ones). I really don't know how that would work, but have thought about it before.

Edit: My idea above is probably still a wash sale, no way I could outsmart the feds on taxes.

I think it would be, because you're buying the same stock within 30 days, regardless.

Like I said though I think the only time this will come into play is my monopoly account, I'm not (planning to) buy individual shares in my IRA, and I don't plan to buy the same boring ETFs in my monopoly account, so it's a real low risk of cross-pollinating those accounts. More so just curious and learning things. Just don't want it to bite me in the arse one day.

It doesn’t matter much, you shouldn’t buy or sell based on taxes. It’s worth getting a handle on the many rules though so you don’t learn the hard way. I learned them all the hard way so far.

One of the S&P 500 losers today IPO’d in 2019. Their earnings look good and they pay a good dividend. I could be wrong, but I think it shows strength that they IPO’d with a dividend out of the gate. I have an order placed. They Deal in plastics and packaging. I googled them and it shows they do plastics for the medical field as well.

The Dow was shaken up due to the AAPL split. Notably, XOM and PFE gor kicked out!

    the esoteric one

Long story short I was playing trivial pursuit with my buddy John years ago. He's one of the smartest dudes I know. Think MIT double major smart. Anyway, towards the end of the game me and him are neck and neck. I got a question that I answered correctly to win. He's usually pretty mild mannered but we had both had a few beers. He knocks over the board and bellows out "Well, aren't you the fucking esoteric one". It just kinda of stuck from then on. lol

Never heard of that word before, much less knew what it meant. Sounds like a pretty smart guy to be using it in a sentence. Or maybe I’m just dumb...cool story anyhow lol

I had to look that word up. And he used it well in that situation.

Well as the esoteric one pointed out, it goes into effect the 31st, but I think the announcement caused the big after hours drop.

I understand it as the Dow being a price weighted index, AAPL now holds much less weight with the upcoming share price reduction due to the split. That brought in more tech companies, which had to remove others to stay at 30. Something like that.

I’ll buy more and hold XOM forever, or when they cut their dividend, whichever comers first. That 8% is good enough for me, don’t care about the share price.

I think they’ll do their best to keep it. The alternative is to cut the dividend, which would lead to a chain reaction of everyone selling the stock, valuation drop, more difficulty in them raising money in the future, etc. I think they’ll try to avoid all of that.

Edited for spell checking due to IPAs.
