    They liquidate your account to produce the $$ to exercise. If you don't have enough after that you go into a negative margin (borrowed) deficit...
    They will continually warn you starting about 3 days out that your options are expiring and may be exercised.
    Etiquette is to close them by 3pm on expiration day...

    So this is where you get into people making money on expiration day because they know there are people holding In the Money contracts without the funds to cover them...So XYZ is trading at $250 a share and you have 3 of the $240 call...and it should be worth $10 (difference) per contract expiring today...But they'll be trading at like $9.95 because they know everyone doesn't have the $24,000 to execute...So they buy at that $5 discount you don't really cry about and then execute and make that extra $$ in volume...

    So Etiquette of closing out the option is easy to do at close and is a fail safe and they will not sell other stocks in the account ?

    The big deal is if your selling contracts...Those could be assigned at any time...
    Buying contracts is up to each broker. Usually an email or communication will happen. Just DON'T get caught holding in the money without the $$ to buy :)

    Yeah...of course..It's ok. My calls are $115...so I'm still way in the $$ and watching for an increase in price as people buy at this discount. I might buy some more longer calls at the discount. But I did miss a LOT of $$ if I had closed at $150..obviously
