I mostly agree with this, but I would say that an '86 with 400WHP would probably feel similar to most cars with 550-600 WHP.

I rode in my buddy's Sonoma multiple times during each phase of the build. He originally installed a 5.3 and made around 400 WHP, give or take. It was quite entertaining to ride in, and plenty fast.

But, then a valve spring failed, and you know what happens next. The silver lining was that he had a friend with a LS2 laying around, and some AI heads. This version originally made closer to 500 WHP, and it was a whole different animal. The "roller coaster" comment sums it up nicely. The feeling at WOT in 3rd gear is like a drug! Once you experience that, you'll probably be less than satisfied with just a "quick" car.

That said, I enjoyed the hell out of my slow-as-shit '85 Celica-Supra back when I had it, so it's definitely relative to experience.

I still think a supercharged, 500 hp Z would make me plenty happy. I hope to get something fun once the 4runner is paid for.

Do not get me wrong, it is possible to have an awful lot of fun in a lower horsepower car that is set up to drive. Just the whole "why would you need that" question is usually asked by someone who hasn't experienced it. No smugness or offense intended by that statement what-so-ever.

I understand this too. I've had the pleasure of setting lap times at the Corvette track in Bowling Green Kentucky... In an F-430

I guess I just don't see the 86 being able to handle 600hp lol

Oh, I fully agree. I'm just saying that the power to weight ratio is a big factor as well.

Heck, I know a guy with a CRX making about 225 HP. That little feather holds its own against normal sized cars with 400+Hp, all while burning oil like an old 2-stroke.

To be fair, those CRXs only weigh about 600lbs

    Exactly. That's what I'm saying. I actually think it's about 1700#.

A 2600# 86 wouldn't require as much power as a 3700# Mustang, or a 4000#+ Dodge brick to yield the same result.

I don't think Dodge has ever made anything as light as 4000lbs

They used to, but not in a long time. The GLH was amazing, light and quick. Also, of the same era, the Conquest. The Viper is amazing, but almost doesn't count. Mostly I agree though.

    LMAO!

I have a buddy who's a big Mopar guy, and he used to talk about the GLH. I've only seen one in my lifetime. The Conquest/Starion was definitely cool.

My Mom's boyfriend has a viper, and said I could drive it if I wanted. But, it needs tires and who knows what else. It's been sitting in his garage neglected. 8500 miles, original tires. Those things are dry rotted as hell!

Why bother having the car if he's too scared to drive it? Never understood people who did that

Drive it if you get the chance. Even driving them normally is an experience. No ripping on it required. I have tuned two of them. They are intoxicating even at the speed limit.

Edit: That being said, I wouldn't buy one unless I had a giant toy budget. They are the definition of a hot-rod. They have some.... Interesting quirks.

He's not scared to drive it. He just has other toys. Definitely no ego, either. You'd never think the guy had any money just talking to him.

I'm hoping to talk him into getting it running this year. He gave me a ride in it back when he first got it(long story about him and my Mom). I still remember how cool it was.

And yes, his toy budget is ridiculous! The Viper is cheap by comparison to some of the stuff he has.

Actually, you'd really get a kick out of what he's building in Florida. It's a '51 Dodge stub-nose cab on a modified Winnebago chassis with a blown Hemi and a roll-back car hauler platform. The car on top also has a Hemio_O
