I am so excited to find this post! I am wanting to do an install of an iPad Mini or a Nexus 7 in my Tacoma. Ive been doing a bit of research on the subject but obviously there isn't much out there on it.

Check out THIS POST and those MP3CAR.COM forums have a lot of stuff about fabrication and such for tablet/Carputer installs.

Now here is what I was planning, feel free to shatter my dreams with reality though.

I am planning on connecting my tablet to a Clarion EQS746 1/2 DIN Graphic Equalizer with Built-in Crossover which will be connected directly to my 5-channel amp. Im trying to remove the headunit from the picture because I just can't afford one at the moment. The equalizer has a line driver for the input and it splits it to the 3 pairs of RCA outs for the 5-channel amp.

As for the connection of the tablet to the Equalizer I may use my Bluetooth Blackberry Music Gateway or just wire it through the 3.5mm jack.

3.5 will sound horrible and bluetooth will be even worse......get a lightning pin to 30 pin converter then get the cable that has the 30 pin on one end and both USB and RCA on the other....run the USB to power for charging the unit and the RCA into the eq.....simple

What about on an Android tablet?

Also: I just discovered this post over on head-fi.org a site that is pretty much the TacomaWorld of audiophiles and if you want truly awesome sound out of your tablet I guess a DAC is the way to go? http://www.head-fi.org/t/507559/list-of-dacs-that-work-with-ipad

depends on the tablet. I think you must have JellyBean at minimum to get the USB Audio function enabled as well.

I was thinking I'd like a Nexus 7. I would just prefer Android because my phone is Android and from what I read online it functions better with bluetooth OBDII readers using the Torque application.

Yeah, I've have heard the same about OBDII .. I believe the main issue is the refresh interval of BT vs WiFi. The dongles I have seen are specifically BT for Android or WiFi for iOS, so you have to switch platforms to avoid the issue.

But it could also be those crappy china knock offs .. the PLX Kiwi (again, BT for Android and Wifi for iOS) does not seem to have that issue, but I have never been hand-on with any of these.

I ordered a Sony MEX-GS600BT head unit, the ********* kit with Image Dynamics CTX65CS speakers, a Polk Audio 300W 2-Channel amp, and a roll of cheap adhesive backed aluminum roofing repair material to experiment with as a sound dampener in my doors (planning on doing a little dampening and sealing while I replace the speakers and run the wires from the amp).
I bought the head unit from crutchfield and it comes with a free dash kit so I think I might try my hand at fabbing up something for the iPad mini with that kit while we wait on bkmcinty's kit. I've never worked with fiberglass so I'm thinking about trying to get by with milling out some plexiglass parts and gluing them together. If all goes well, I'll end up with something functionally the same as soundwaves' second ipad mini install with the lightning connector and magnets but I also want to add a safety latch on the far end of the ipad to keep it from possibly popping out.
I am wondering exactly how they've got the lightning connector attached though, so that the ipad can be tilted in and out. I'm thinking something at the base of the connector to keep it from pushing into the dash, leaving a little room for tilting where the connector protrudes, and then silicone surrounding the connector at the protrusion might do the trick. Guess we'll see...

Same here as far as the hands on goes. MP3Car forums have a lot on the subject and it definitely is an issue of the updates per second on the Chinese knock offs. This isn't necessarily a horrible thing if you are only asking it to display a couple of stats at a time, but with a fully loaded screen all the stats will suffer. They talk about the superior performance of a $140 bluetooth OBDII reader in This Post.

Not worth it in my opinion. I'm not big on that stuff though, Ill be OK with the cheapo-depot ones.

Don't have one mainly due to the cost of the data plan. I'm an old Alltel member that was sold off to Verizon. I've heard enough of lies from Verizon and I've set them straight to the point that they don't want to mess with me any more. I have just learned about Straight Talk. A few of my friends have it and they love it. Unlimited everything for only $45 a month. In my research, I've learned that they will cut you off if and when you go over 2 gigs of data and not let you reup for the next month. Still trying to find out if this is true. Sorry but if something sounds to good to be true, I try to find out everything I can before jumping in. That's why I'm trying to find out every app I can get to use without the internet. The thought of a radio mounted behind or somewhere else to have fm radio just really kills the whole tablet idea for me. I'm to the point of just ordering a Pioneer AVIC-X940BT and when I get a smart phone just get a plug and enjoy what I can.

That was me. It is called App Remote. It only works with the Sony GS decks. There is a video about it in my previous post.

The App Remote requires a Sony Deck, but something is needed to handle audio out to the speakers.

The TuneIn app requires an internet connection.

I think it's based on a standard dash kit, so you may be SOL until he makes one for '13
