    iPad costs more
iPad is more difficult to give an clean OEM look (air vents block the connector port)
iPad would be more noticeable and prone to theft

Also, someone already has a dash kit for the iPhone:
    http://www.devium.us/products/dash/

The 7" form factor is just fine for most of us.
I didn't choose the iPad because I don't want a 10" screen, I want a normal sized screen with added features.

    not by that much.

also the few set ups i have seen you can take the ipad out in like 10 seconds or less, so you can hid in it the truck or take it with you and no one will see it.

also that face plate for iphone is $390 and one for $420. iphone has a small screen.

and if i’m going to do all the work to get a ipad to work good and look good. i want a rice size screen.

"not by that much" is relative.. the device costs more and the development would be more constricted by space. The iPad Mini also has the potential to fit in a broader range of vehicles and budgets.

iPhone does have a small screen but it's a device a lot of people already own. $390 is still much less than a custom dash kit + amplification device. I personally think the iPhone is too small for a car but for someone that has one and doesn't mind the size it would be perfect. I was simply noting that your comment about "might as well use an iPhone" is already an option, so it's obviously not that stupid.

I think your last remark hits it right on - anyone that wants something custom and unique is usually better off doing it themselves. This thread was started specifically for the smaller and cheaper but still capable iPad Mini. The trend is catching on even faster with the Nexus 7 because of the lower price point.

The iPad has been out for almost 3 years and the few setups I have seen were either not that great or very expensive. Immediately after the iPad Mini and Nexus 7 were launched installers from all over began dropping them in custom. I think that says something about which device is more desired. If you think the Mini is stupid, start your own project :D

HaHA that video is hilarious! Ironic that im doing this bc i kinda hate apple.....the video descibes apple to a T! But idk why they keep saying the mini doesnt have retina display because it does. But there are multiple reasons why i dont like the full size ipad for this application. 1. Its more expensive 2. More prone to theft like NoSoup4You said and it looks too big and bulky in my opinion and would require A LOT more modification. The mini is just perfect in my opinion and the main reason im using it is for navigation and the web browser.

You can bypass the iPad or iPods head jack and built in amp(which is I'm sorry lame) with the right attachment. All audio will go through the I/O port and put at line level through a headphone jack. I use it in line with a small portable headphone amp and it sounds WAY better.

Exactly. Using the 3.5mm jack is just crap for high end audio. Good find, I'll have to share this with my Apple buddy who uses is iPad3 in his car for his main deck. Thanks!

Have you used that actual headphone amp?

I have been looking for one I will be using once this gets installed, but it didn't seem like the headphone amps had enough power for a full-size stereo system.

    You bet

Granted if you get a nice HU with an iPod hook up that would be the same thing.

That's more for if you have just a jack in and then amp is for headphones only.

    Still it works great!

It's called a headphone amp for a reason :D you would never want to drive a speaker with it. Plus the only out puts are 3.5mm haha

I have that amp yes, well I have the BitHead they callit. Same amp but it has a USB input as well so can be used as a DAC as well. I love it.

You'd only want the small plug to bypass the amp in the iPad then you'd plug it into your headunit and from the head unit a real speaker amp.

ok cool .. yeah I was hoping to find something the size of the headphone amp that had the power. Looks like a cheap single din with iPod connectivity might be an easy solution as well.

Yea you'll need a headunit regardless for volume(gain) control. That would be a better option.

They do make some pretty small amps now though. Just not that small haha

My buddy is such an Apple Fanboy (Or Sheepole as I call them) he refuses to buy a nice HU that works with the iOS he only wants an iOS device to use for media. He isn't an audiophile in anyway, but his audio is terrible with the 3.5mm jack.

Looks like there's room for some new products .. small, headless car amps

Too bad these guys don't sell "The Head Unit" by itself .. that way it could be mounted cleanly behind the dash with a tablet in front: http://www.devium.us/products/dash/
