That is exactly what I am driving at, seat, glovebox, etc. etc., or get an interface with better sound quality and suited more for this type of install. There are a couple on the market already.

Yes it's connected via USB, and it's a lightning connector not a 30 pin :) I considered mounting under my seat but didn't want to run the wiring down there, it will fit perfect under the seat though I did some test fitting with that idea

This will fit '05-'11 as I think the dash was changed in the '12 model

I guess i'm late to the party but I've had mine installed for the last 5 months and there are issues with temperature. When it's below freezing, the system I used refuses to start for a 5-10 seconds. If the iPad has the sun directly shining on it, it will suspend itself until it's safe to power on. During a Texas summer, after several hours of sitting in the cab, it took up to 5 minutes for the iPad to cool down enough.

Does the iPad mini wifi have GPS radio or you have to get the 4G version to get GPS?

    Thanks.

I imagine that unit requires a power source, so is it always ON or it has to be turned ON and manually paired with the iPad via bluetooth? If it's a hassle to always have to be turned ON and paired, I might just get the iPad mini 4G to save the trouble.

It runs for 8 hours on its own battery. Once paired with the ipad it will always pair up. If it is not plugged in it does need to be turned on.
The bonus to this unit is that it is much more accurate than the gps on the 4g ipad. Once you lose cell service the 4g Ipads GPS is not as accurate. It alost does not require you to have a data plan with your cell provider to run. The way around this is to jailbreak either you android or iOS so you can hotspot your phone. A lot of work when you can get the unit I have or another company that makes a GPS for the iPad is Bad Elf. Just throwin out all the options to you. Lots to think about.
I spend a lot of time out in areas with Zero cell service and this is by far the best option. Theres guys I run with that have Lowrance systems that like my offroad navigation better than what they have.

Here is a shot of my track from 2 days ago using ViewRanger on my ipad mini. This is a totally standalone offroad GPS mapping program. The map programs that come on your phone or the ipads require a Data connection in order to download maps as yyou drive around.
