Yes, if you go outside the Qi standard, Samsung's extension appears to give something like a 1.4x improvement. Perhaps some of that will be incorporated into the Qi standards in the future. https://www.att.com/chargers/samsung-fast-charge-wireless-charging-stand.html#sku=sku8260291 https://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/best-wireless-phone-chargers/

There is of course a tradeoff -- heat. The faster you charge, particularly with wireless, the more heat you generate in the phone. Cooking your phone's battery regularly doesn't tend to help it's lifespan.

Really, I think for a lot of folks the standard Qi rates would be perfectly fine, and any issues are more imagined than real. I find that ~30% per hour (what I get with my iphone7) gets the job done just fine. It's very rare that my phone battery gets low. During the day I'm at my desk often enough that setting my phone on the pad (which I put in the spot I usually set my phone anyway) keeps it charged. When I get home I put my phone on the side counter in the kitchen just as I've always done, but now there's a Qi pad sitting in that spot.

Sure, there are folks it wouldn't work so well for, or times when someone who normally uses wireless charging. In those cases just plug in a cable and charge that way. I'm unaware of any phones with wireless charging which don't still charging from a cable.

Actually let me ask how exactly you're using dropbox or google drive with your music?

Just for grins, using my computer I grabbed an mp3 of a podcast and popped it into my dropbox account. Picked up my phone, opened Dropbox, and played it from Dropbox. Easy Peasy.

Looks like Google Play music and Amazon Music are also well supported: https://ios.gadgethacks.com/how-to/put-music-your-iphone-without-using-itunes-0147391/

I've found the Qi charger is handy for when I'm running errands around town. Keeps my phone from running down while I'm streaming a Podcast or Spotify. If I have to use Waze or Google Maps(Lets be honest, the OEM nav licks the biggest taint), or my GoPro App, I'll put the phone into my Ram Mount.

the heat issue is the biggest issue i have even with regular wireless chargers. i use to use my TLYT Vu stand alot but got really concerned about battery life and stopped using it last year. now i just use the samsung fast charger that came with the phone as needed.

it wasnt a big issue when i was using my note 4, i just replaced the battery after a year since it only cost about $25 for a replacement oem samsung battery from verizon. but when i was using it with my note 5 and 7, i noticed the battery life was degrading and since you couldnt replace the battery i stopped using the wireless chargers.

    but that is just me.

So many people buy a 40,000 TRD 4x4 offroad and don't do any off roading. I don't see the point in that but people do it

I haven't found my phone to heat up much charging wirelessly, though as I posted it seldom gets very depleted and thus the charging cycles tend not to be very long. I do like that Qi shuts off charging when the battery is topped up.

So far with nearly a year of ownership of my iphone 7 I'm not perceiving any change in battery life. Maybe it's wearing down and I've not noticed.

Certainly this stuff will be situation/usage dependent and vary between different people.

Worst case, out-of-warranty battery replacement is $80 at Apple. So yeah, more costly than a $25 battery. Probably a pain in the azz if you're far away from an Apple store too, though I have a couple stores not far away. I'd imagine third party cell phone repair places will replace worn batteries for less.

I have a Nexus 5 and stopped using Qi charging for this particular reason, the phone gets super hot to the point i'm worried.

@gpb Do you think Nillken will make a case for the iPhone X that will work with their Qi car mount that you and I did? I really like the mount, but because of the magnet placement of the case/mount, it's pretty unique to them. I supposed I could find a case that has a matching Qi mount and Frankenstein it if needbe.

I believe Samsung fast charge pads are only beneficial for Samsung devices that are optimized for this feature. Correct me if i'm wrong of course.

I don't know if Nillken will do something like that, but with effectively all iphone 8/X coming with Qi charging capabilities I'd expect to see a lot more aftermarket support for it.

In the worst case, I suppose I could take a thin shell case and embed some thin magnets in there. 9.53mm x 0.79mm thick would likely do well, placed at the optimal locations. 10mm Forstner bit to make the hole.

At present I'm not planning to upgrade my iphone 7, so there's time for the market to catch up. That's one of the troubles with jumping on a brand new iphone that has a change like this; the accessories market can take a few months to mature.

Yes, as far as I know it is Samsung-only and is not supported within the Qi standard. The samsung chargers and phones will both step down to Qi standard charging if used with non-samsung devices.

I really didn't want to want it, but I want it. I'm a comm guy through and through. I like the new stuff. I will probably wait until after the holiday rush dies off on it though. I would rather grab the AppleTV first.

Not quite, i dont think the 8+ shares the same processor.. Ive only really looked at the specs of the X since im not really in the market for a new phone right now.. Im starting to notice a dip in battery life with my 7+ but ive got it on 80-100% brightness most of the day. I also spend a lot of time in the desert so the phone sees some heat for sure.

ok then yeah, i dont see why it wouldnt have near the same specs. The thing thats got me drooling is the 1080p @ 240fps and 4K @ 60fps. Would make filming all my B-Roll footage so nice.
