I just saw this post and a similar thing happened to my friend who owns a pest control business and has a Tacoma. He needs a 4wd to get to some spots for his work and his 4wd hi range was showing engaged but not working like he thought it should. So a trip to the dealer and from my understanding is something computer related and was fixed fairly quick. I have reached out to him asking him what was done and if he would send me a copy of the repair order. He will be back home in a week so hopefully your is a simple fix as well.

If the problem is the front actuator - it would go into 4L just fine and still not be 4WD

Interested to see what they say, and I have another test for you to illustrate 4WD is working if you don’t trust them.

Yea if we know it goes to 4LO we can first assume the transfer case is working since the 4HI tcase position lies in between 2HI and 4LO.

The check of the ADD is then simple. Put in 4HI or 4LO, jack up just the front two wheels, and spin one tire. Since the front drive shaft is locked to the rears, which are on the ground, spinning one front tire should spin the other front in the opposite direction indicating they are linked together through the open diff via the ADD.

The OP was last seen driving his truck into the bay at the local dealer. Not a word since. Some say that they saw bigfoot in the passenger seat.

I have seen a good number of people recommend pulling ABS number 2 fuse, under the hood, for serious snow / ice driving. There is no way to fully turn off the traction control system without doing this, apparently.

Ok everyone, I had it to the dealership. After some back and forth, it was determined and proven to be working "fine". That being said, Im not still not satisfied with how poor it is in this weather (among other things) so I've since been over to my local Ram dealership and made a deal to trade it in for another Ram 1500. This will be my fourth. Pick it up next week.
Like mentioned previously in this thread, I've had 3 previous Rams and after my lady wrote off my last one, I thought I'd try something different. I never doubted my choice when I went with Ram as they've been super reliable, drive great, good power with the Hemi and a lot better in the winter, so I've gone back to the "Darkside"
I got a smoking deal, in no small part to how well the Taco held its value so I will never mock a Toyota for their fantastic resale value if nothing else. I just decided to go back with what I'm familiar with and always liked.
Thank you all for the advice and comments. If on the trail, I will definitely be checking out your taillights. On the street, I'll wave affectionately as my Hemi powers by lol.
Take care all and best of luck!
    Cheers.

Good luck with your new Ram and thanks for checking back with the update. Can I ask you if they offered any solid/physical proof (like lifting front tires off the ground) to confirm it was "working fine"? I understand that the system in the 3rd gens now has diagnostics they can pull from the 4x4 ECU? Did they plug in and get any codes or hard evidence it was fully engaged?

Probably like most of the parts cannon operators these days…”plugged my thing in like I did at school and it says it’s all good”.

I definitely would have jacked that shit up and made sure.
