I live in murrieta and drive the same amount that you do to Escondido for work. First time I saw your truck I did a double take! Good looking truck and i’ll See you around town

If you can afford it, get it. The 4x4 is nice to have when you need it but unless you are doing some heavy off roading or do a lot of driving on dirt or muddy roads you wont likely use it much. Unless you get stuck most standard driving situations you can get by with 2wd.

Simple answer... if you can afford it get it. If you hesitate when you ask yourself that question. Don't do it lol.

You have a great truck now and in reality will be the same truck if you trade in for a 4x4 but with a new switch you probably wont use a whole lot. Basing this solely on the average person using it as a daily commute vehicle...YMMV

Your truck should match your driving needs. If you never or seldom go off road, 4x4 is just extra cost, extra weight to drag around and more maintenance. I get the "if you need it" idea but in some situations it's overkill. My 2018 Sport is a 4x2 and my previous 2012 Prerunner was 4x2. Got me to anywhere I cared to go with ease. This included a some of dirt roads, driving over grassy fields and a bit of light snow driving (Dallas Ft Worth area). I don't off road or rock climb just for the sake of it. My next Taco or other such truck I buy 'might' be 4x4 but we'll see when the time comes.

If you don’t like yer truck, give her here

No, but really, you should off-road your 2wd. It won’t do any rock crawling but it should get the job done in dry SoCal. Once you get your bearings and wanna do harder trails, I’d say your best bet is to get a cheap little —and most importantly paid off— 4x4 as your toy. :mudding:

For the situation you described and like many have said, 4x2 is sufficient. Ground clearance is key to many trails. I just explored the Mojave Preserve and drove on part of the Mojave Road and didn't need 4x4 once.

Other things to keep in mind about 4x4:
    1) the manual recommends 4x4 once a month for 10 miles (to lube up the mechanisms). This can be a chore or this can motivate you to get out more.
    2) 4x4 will better enable you to wander and explore more but when you explore areas that require 4x4 (like our deserts) you're gonna be sinking more money into this rig.
    a) sliders and underbody armor (skid plate) [$1200]
    b) survival, trail, and recovery gear [$3000]

I live in a place that often gets snow from December - March.... I've driven my old 2008 Sport in the worst kind of winter storms and it performed like a champ, unstoppable. Looking forward to my driving my new 2018 Sport this winter.... Though I can't get my head around why someone living in a warm climate would want a 4x4.... You'd have to be into some serious off-roading to justify the extra $$ - in my opinion.

I got the 2018 TRD Sport 4x4. For normal driving situations I don't need it but when I play in the SoCal trails it's a different story. That's when it comes in handy and most importantly...IT'S FUN. Nobody mentioned the fun factor here, which is huge for me :)

A locker is pretty epic but 95% is pretty generous. Especially if said 4x4 has a locker.

But for the OP a rear locker sounds like it would probably be a better choice than upgrading to an open diff 4x4. And there’s not much better than seeing a bunch of bro’d out 4x4s egos smashed when a 2wd truck rolls into their off-road spot.

If you are thinking of driving in or around snow, you’ll want a 4x4. I got stuck in the snow one time with a 2wd SUV and that I as the last time. Traded it in 2 weeks later.

Depends if you need it. For your driving.

In Canada all roads are offroad in the winter where i live.

They just sand and plow the road as the salt only works till-12 C. So driving on ice sheets with 4x4 and snow tires help.

I have a 4x4 because I need it, snow. I have a 4x4 because I want it, playing on forest roads. I think they have better resale value. Just my opinion.
