Less than or equal to 32s go 4.88
    Greater than 32s go 5.29

    Pretty simple

    Edit - for ATs*

Before the tune i was almost thinking of doing another gear change but this custom tune i am running has changed my mind. I do still lag on the steeper hills but the truck now shifts nicely as needed not the 6-5-4 screaming rpms like before! I am very happy with it but if i could get another 50+ HP's that would be great!

80 MPH is pretty standard on the main Interstates in Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, South Dakota, and Montana.

Before I re-geared to 5.29s, I had 33s and felt that the taco was a little sluggish. It really made a difference afterwards. Gas took a hit but I recently OV Tuned that made up for it.

    Work in progress...
I was actually thinking about going down a couple tire sizes, short term, just to figure out the ratio I want to be at. Used tires cost less than new gears.

I am running the Nitro 4.56 on 35's, it seems to be a good combo.

I have 5.29 and love the way the truck drives. Use to lag on long grades but not anymore. I have the DCLB with a shell. 32” tires and a 2 1/2” lift. The back is always full of gear. I will be adding plate tear bumper soon.
    I’m happy with these gears

A bunch a cool stickers, a bada ass MetalMiller Tx Longhorns grill emblem painted Hemi Orange, JBA long tube headers with o2 sims, Diff breather mod, Red LED interior lights, Fancy head unit that plays ipod n movies, Also DIY install factory stuff like, factory cruise control, factory intermittent wipers, OME nitro struts with 886x springs and toy tec top plate, JBA high caster UCA's for better alignmnet and dey beefier too, Old Man Emu Dakar leaf springs in da rear with the gear, U bolt flipper, Ivan Stewart TRD rims with 33" K Bro 2's, some bad ass weather tech floor liners so I don't muck up my interior, an ATO shackle flipper for mo travel in da rear wit the gear, also super shiny Fox 2.0 shocks back there too, all sorts of steal armor for bouncing off of the rocks like demello sliders, AP front skid, trans skid, n transfer skid, demello gas tank skid, and a tough as nails ARB bumper with warn 8k winch, I'm sure there's more
For 33" and smaller tires, 4.88 will do you good. 33" and larger tires, 5.29 will do you good. Add in weight of armor, gear, and things that will inhibit aerodynamics, then consider that you will need more power.

I am running 5.29's with 35's and a SC. Love the gearing with the SC. Top end (speed) sacrifice but she does great off road, etc. I can cruise at 80mph with zero problems. She jumps right out of the gate too! That said, I do not regret re- gearing my rig whatsoever. AT.

I spent a year flip flopping between the 4.88 and 5.29 mega threads. It'll turn your brain to mush.

The short story is that if you're sticking with the 31/32 tire range you're in this gray area where both will fine, but you'll sacrifice something no matter which way you go.

4.88s will be a game changer, especially paired with OVT. The sacrifice is that it "limits" your ability to go bigger/heavier and still keep the same performance. If you turn your truck into a fatty it'll bog down some.

5.29s will be a game changer, especially paired with OVT. The sacrifice is that you'll run your engine a bit harder at the higher rpms. Most people will tell you that high rpms are fine for this engine (I agree with them). One of the original TW members that led the charge for 5.29s ran them on a stock setup and said they were great, however, all the postings I read of his mentioned he was running backroads at no more than 65 mph. I did see some feedback from another guy who had 5.29s on smaller tires and said he wished he had gone 4.88.

I went with 4.88s and have 265/70/17 (31.6 tires). Now I want 33s. When I do so I'm going to be moving to 255 skinnies because I think a 285s would be too much of a performance hit with the 4.88s. I also live in Denver and am above 10k feet a good bit, which adds an extra layer of reduced performance.

Would I have gone 5.29 if I had all the info back then as I do now? Probably...because ultimately the extra 3-400 rpms aren't a huge jump and 33s/armor are in my near future. If I was staying with the 265/70/17 and had minimal weight then 4.88s are splendid.
