Is a 2021 TRD Offroad, 2WD worth it?

I had to sell my baby a couple years back due to a move, as I was commuting alot. Traded it in for a Camry for the MPGs. Anyways, I moved again and am now closer to work so I can get a truck again. My local dealer has a 2021 TRD Offroad, super white, double cab. HOWEVER, it is not 4x4. They said they'd give it to me for 36k.... worth it, or no? Keep in mind, my last Tacoma was an access cab, 4 cylinder, 2WD. So obviously this is still an upgrade and way more truck than my last. Just kinda hesitant about it not being a 4x4, especially with the offroad tag it carries.

Hell no. I personally wouldn't even pay 26k for that truck. 36k is way too much for a 2wd truck.

Also, I don't understand 2wd trucks. 4wd or no truck at all.

I love my 2008 TRD OR Prerunner, but I wish I'd held out 12 more months and saved up for 4WD.

No way I would buy a 2WD truck new. Esp not for $36k.

It’s not worth it to me. A 2wd off road pickup seems like a oxymoron to me. YMMV

In my non-scientific opinion the best upgrades to make a pickup more capable off-road are in order of importance:

    1) inclinometer
    2) 4wd
    3) off-road tire type
    4) armor
    5) taller tires
    6) locking diffs
    7) lift
    8) traction control
    9) shocks
    10) increased suspension travel

    Nope....

I personally have no interest in ever owning a 2wd truck. That aside, the price seems high. I paid $37k for my 2020 TRD Sport 4wd dbl cab.

I paid $33k I think for my 2020 4wd dcsb OR. It was about what I paid for my 2016 SR5 4wd. Prices seem to vary my market though.

Hardly anyone drives 2wd pickups in my state anymore.

Because everyone has a different reason for owning a truck. Alot of people don't have an extra $6k-$8k to spend for 4x4 vs the 4x2. I have had 3 trucks, all 4x2s and I have never been in a situation where I needed a 4x4. I've had 2 cars as well, both rwd and front wheel, never needed an AWD. Although that factor may change drastically in other states or if the truck is a rec vehicle. While 4x4 is the more capable of the two, some people will just never use it.

I don’t disagree, but the question is whether to spend extra cash on a off-road that is 2wd

What else is in there, LED lights, tech/premium, etc?

I got a 2020 TRD OR DC SB White in December of 2019 (so roughly a little bit later in the model year than a 21 is now) for 36k. 4wd. NO packages, no tech, no LEDs, nothing.

You're in southern CA. If you plan to stick in southern CA, the $$$ up front you'd save right now will be the same "lesser" you get for a trade in/private sale down the road, if you never go off road, you'd be fine with 2WD. Less components to go wrong, less weight, less crap to worry about, less to maintain, etc etc. You don't have snow to worry about (if you have snow in southern CA, where a 2WD vs 4WD tacoma makes the difference, we've got bigger problems than you getting home).

Id say you'd be fine with a 2WD truck, unless you go wheeling/want to go wheeling a lot. That's the only time I've used mine other than snow.

this is a very situational question. where do you live? what do you do with your truck? what's the price difference you can find for a 4x4 vs a 2wd? i mean if you live in texas and use it to commute and take the kids bikes to the local park then i don't see an issue. if you live in colorado and go hunting, fishing snowboarding and travel the mountain passes in winter months then 4x4 would be preferred. there are a gazillion cars that do everything except go "off roading" so i think a 2wd with the locker would be fine.

In Canada, Toyota doesn't even bother to offer 2WD Tacoma in any trim.

It's SoCal. If you are using it for SoCal things you don't need 4x4. Save the insurance cost.

You would have the clinometer, the locker, and you can add wheels, tires, etc.

The price for a 2021 seems reasonable to me if you are getting things like the tech package. Make sure it has the auto headlights!!

Don't listen to that (predictable) pack of birds that always jumps up and yell at you to buy used. Used = someone else's problem that they traded at a dealer.

I did not expect to get this many replies lol so @ all of you who offered some input.
Anyways, looking at dealers in my area, I cannot find any 2021 4x4s for less than 40,000. So obviously prices have gone up quite a bit all around.
Thing is, I need to stay below 40,000. I don't want to go used, bc I want the two years of free service.
I live in Southern California, and the main purpose is driving back and forth to work. I may get a small lightweight trailer to go camping, but nothing way back country. Might go wheeling every once in a while, I had no problem in my 4 banger doing so. Only got stuck once, but got unstuck by myself. I really just kinda miss having a truck, and I do not want to get a full size. Too clunky.
