No, I wouldn't suggest a 4x2 TRD Off-Road. I'm not sure why Toyota offers a 4x2 TRD Off-Road, because it doesn't really make any sense.

With a 4x2 TRD Off-Road, you lose the Crawl Control and Multi-Terrain Select tools, while also losing your 4WD function all together. However, it does come with a rear locker, which won't be very helpful if you are not running "aggressive" tires.

The same goes for the 4x4 TRD Off-Road with the manual transmission, it also doesnt come with Multi-Terrain Select or Crawl Control, which is a bummer.

Worst mistake I ever made was buying a 2wd truck. I made sure my 150 had 4wd don’t make the same mistake. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it

Just to play devil's advocate: Dude lives in so cal. A rear locker and a decent set of tires will get you pretty much anywhere you need to go down there. Even if you burn out East to the BLM lands in NV, it's mostly desert track.
If I could have got my TRD OR without MTS or crawl control, I'd have gladly shaved that money off the purchase price. None of that adds any realistic value to me. I'd have much rather had a 4:1 manual transfer case.

My vote still goes with 4x4, but in southern cal it's probably a wash on if you'll ever actually need it.

I had a 2nd gen 2wd as a work truck for years. Even in the snow it was fine with a bit of weight in the bed.

    Oh yes, winter of '93....

It is a 1/10 of a mile to the "main" dirt road and I had a tired old Wagoneer with a plow back then (not road legal).

I went over 100 miles plowing snow on that 1/10 of a mile road that winter.

My daily was a Dodge RamClunker -- froze my @$$ off at 14 mpg -- but it sure would go in the snow.

So it sounds like a 2WD would be more than fine for your needs and location (especially with the OR's AT tires and a locker), and you would have to pay at least $4k more in your area for a 4x4? And you'll be saving on extra fuel and maintenance costs in the long run?

That honestly sounds pretty tempting if you think you'll simply have no real use for 4WD. A truck like that would be even more than I need here in FL.

I think you will regret not getting a 4x4, especially when it comes time to trade or sell it.

Or he could be one of those guys like me who drove away with a new 2019 SR 2WD for $23700 and easily added intermittent wipers (all 2020 models have now FYI), keyless entry, OEM fogs, and other goodies to use as an actual for real truck. All for $10,000 or more less than the “trim” some goob in California has like heated seats for what in sunny Cali lol

Hahaha to each their own! For me it was worth it to have all OEM stuff and not cheep aftermarket switches, wiring, jerry rigging, wire taps, velcro, zip ties, etc.

Plus... seat heaters in SoCal work great for a sore back after working.

Nope, quality switch, OEM fog light harness, and lights, dash symbol illuminates with fogs on OEM style. I do electrical work so no jury rigging required. Enjoy those $10k seat heaters and fender flares and mirror turn signals though! :D

Try Freeman Toyota here in Northern California. Will probably be the lowest price you can find. Get a cheap flight and driver her home.

I would say if it's at least 7% off MSRP then you would be getting your money's worth . We all drive our trucks in 2 wheel drive most of the time anyway .

NO, This is some Toyota marketing ripoff, 2wd with a TRD logo on it :der:, I always thought that before I got the Real TRD 4x4.

It has all those things except one! Only thing in that list it doesn’t have is the heated seats :( Trying to work the deal!

Well, no, you're wrong. It's not a Toyota marketing ripoff. TRD is "Toyota Racing Development." It doesn't specify 2wd or 4wd. The components and engineering that go into the trucks with the TRD logo -- there's nothing that says a 4wd TRD is any more of a TRD than a 2wd.

you should try off-roading in CA NV or AZ some time. It’s a little different vs the pop up tent overland life and “trails ”

Bilstein 6112 front / 5100 rear (extended) shocks, Headstrong AAL, Firestone airbags, 4.88 gears, OME Carrier bearing drop kit, Aluminum 1/4" skids (engine to transfer). Custom sliders (1.75" HREW tube w/ 3/16" base plates). Custom front bumper and high clearance rear bumper (1/4" steel plate, 1.75" tube.) Apex 5500 winch w/synthetic line (36lbs) and required accessories for an underpowered winch (snatch blocks and extra line.) Tekonsha P3 brake controller, remote start, any-time-backup camera w/ front facing camera, Leer 100R shell (w/e-track single slot tie-down mounts for removable Yakima EasyTop.) Cat shields by CaliRaised. Husky liners, window tint, heated seat (passenger only.) Relentless bed rail brackets with QuickFists (shovel/axe/fire extinguisher.) Hondo Garage Un-holey vent mount. Anytime rear with front facing camera. Billet front seat risers. Viair 88p. 265/75r16 Goodyear Ultra-terrain tires.
The cost of ownership = depreciation + maintenance + repairs.

If/when you sell your 2wd Off-road Tacoma you can expect a smaller buyer pool which translates into larger depreciation.

Not knowing much about your financial situation except that you were pinched just a couple years ago.. I'd say travel out of CA for a solid low miles used 3rd gen OR buy a new SR /SR5 4x4 (as they can be had with the same engine and auto transmission as the pro/off-road models. same truck for thousands less.)

My $0.02 and worth what you paid. :)

Good luck on your vehicle search.

If you want the 4wd OR, just save up for it or spend the extra money. That beats having regrets down the road. Either way, it ain't like $36k is cheap either. That's still a good amount of money so don't settle. If you feel like the extra cost isn't worth it, then by all means get the 2wd so long as you're good with it.
