Is a glove-box light not standard?

I took apart part of my glove-box today in order to get to the light socket/assembly/harness that I assumed had fallen into the dash. Turns out I don't have a light at all, just the hole for it.

Did glove-box lights not come standard? Did it depend on trim level? I have an SR5.

Is there a OEM harness I can buy to put a light in? There are a lot of tools in my glove-box, I would definitely like a light in there.

You could always just wire up an aftermarket 12v LED strip tapped into the cig lighter wiring. You just need an inline sensor to turn on when you open it.

Actually now that I think about it, if you don't use your ashtray it has a small light that you can extend the wiring for and add a magnetic sensor. Weird how they put a light in the ashtray, but not standard in the glove box.

What I did, was to pick/pull a bulb/socket/connector from another Toyota (Celica, as I recall), and install it into that matching hole in my Tacoma. Then I wired it into the cig-lighter circuit, which means the light is on whenever the key is in the ACC position.

That works too. If you wanted something brighter you could always ditch the bulb and put in a full LED strip.

Read up if that generation 4Runner or sequoia came standard with a bulb. I know the 4runners had a locking glove box.

My 04 Tacoma DC came standard w/ a glove box light. I even changed it to a blue #74 LED.

Anybody have the OEM part number for the socket assembly? My 2 99's have the connector ready to go right next to the hole in the roof of the glove box. I'd really like to just plug a socket into that and add a bulb and call it good.
Bonus points if you can tell me the same for the ashtray light, I have a plug for that as well but no socket was installed.
I checked both with a test light, the ashtray dims, the glove box is either on or off, goes on with the parking lights.
    THANKS!

Here is the part number for the lamp housing 81260-33010. It takes a 74 bulb.

Us 1st Gens aren’t so lucky enough to have a garage opener.

I was joking because I bought a 2017 TRD Sport 4x4 4door upgraded equipment...no damn garage door opener in it. I mean I didn't even think to check. I get home all happy, have grab a couple beers and to out to program the garage door opener only to find out the situation. LOL, any ways, I figured a way around it like you have to do on this truck, looks like you are doing the same.

I bought a 2012 Nissan Titan rear view mirror with HomeLink so I don’t have that issue, don’t you 3rd Gens have HomeLink mirrors too?

I think the 3rd Gens have them in the Limited versions, or special order? I know mine doesn't. I didn't realize a Nissan rear view mirror would bolt up...I am gonna have to check that out. Thanks.

For my 1998 it didn’t. We don’t have windshield epoxied wedge style mirrors or any type of wiring, we just had the standard flip type mirror attached to the map lights.

I had to epoxy my own wedge, and wire the mirror from a pigtail.

Dang for what they charge on the 3rd gen's, that should be standard. Need the Tundra (or four runner?) amenities on the Tacomas. The price difference is almost the same. Guess I'll keep my 1st gens for a while longer.
