It's not something you get for looks unless you're a mall crawling poser.

If you will actually use it, you won't care about looks as it's function over form.

If you have to ask about the looks of it I'm inclined to think you're the crawler poser type that will never need it lol

I'm in high school right now and the cosmetic market targeting the ricers out here is still crazy. Anything that'll make it look like you got a couple extra horsepower I guess.

Anyways I settled on getting the snorkel because I don't want my truck to drown in some muddy water in central Florida

Nah it was more of a question of if it's just ugly or not. I'm getting it for the watercrossings in florida when I go offroading on weekends.

So this is a weekend after a rain. I was working in an area that I had to drive 96 miles one way 26 of that was in dust that was hub deep. After blowing out an air filter every day and changing them twice a week I said screw it and got mine. I'll never own a vehicle without one now.

I wish I had saved a fake car-phone antenna. I’d put in on my Tacoma, just because. Maybe stick it beside my fake “Bro-breather” snorkel I’m bringing to market next month. In fact, I could use the same sales pitch for the Bro Breather: “They’ll be impressed, but only you will know the truth”

*Cracks knuckles* Where do I begin?
When I first saw one I thought, "who'd in their right mind would do this?" Now I like them. The fact that this question is even raised bears some significance on snorkels being thought of as "ugly."

I’d buy one if a snorkle let my truck do this:

I actually watched one of my buddy's hydrolock his motor in about 18" of water. It's more about speed through the water, which creates a bow wake and jets water into the intake, then it is about water depth. And for the record, he did it right after I made the same water crossing and wasn't going much faster than I was. I consider the difference between me being ok and him hydrolocking that day was just dumb luck.

This is what I'm afraid of. My friends xterra got messed up in only 3 feet of water.

Well I can tell you what ive learned from my own personal experiences and those of my friends.

The air filter is very absorbent and will keep a good bit of water from being sucked into the engine. It saved me a couple times, before I got a snorkle, when I was running through washes during monsoon season and hitting big deep puddles and high speeds. In those cases my check engine light came on because the filter was saturated and the engine couldn't draw enough air through it. I pulled the filter and let it dry out and all was well.

I had a friend fry the computer on his fj when he got it too deep and water started pouring through the fire wall. That rig was instantly dead in the water. So, while a snorkle will help keep you from hydrolocking due to a bow wake during a water crossing, it does not turn your truck into a submarine. Fact is, there's seals and electronics everywhere and if a seal fails or the wrong thing gets wet then your fucked, plain and simple.

What the snorkle does do for you is draw REAL cold air into the engine, and lots of it. And you're not sucking dust out of the wheel well anymore. I live in southern Arizona and if I'm behind a couple other trucks, there's so much dust in the air anyway that it probably has no benefit. But when I'm in the lead or alone, I'm definitely getting cleaner air. Also it keeps water from being forced through the air filter by a bow wake during water crossings. It eliminates that huge risk, so for me it was a no brainer after seeing my friend hydrolock.
