The Dmax was definitely a hindrance to the group. If it wasn't a sponsored vehicle it wouldn't be on the show.

I own a 04 DCSB as well as a 97 LX450. The only benefit my Tacoma has over the cruiser for the trails is the size. It’s easier to get it into the smaller trails when compared to the wider and taller LX. Other than that the cruiser is the one I’d choose for going off-road. Solid axle coil front and rear compared to IFS front and leaf rear. It’s just the better platform. It’s more comfortable and more capable. I believe the 80 series land cruiser is Toyota’s finest hour. The engine could be better but other than that it’s the truck I’d choose over any other. Neither make good daily drivers in my opinion though. Not when gas is $5.50 a gallon where I’m at. I’ve got a Honda for my daily commute :)

The FJ40 and 80 series are some of the toughest off-road vehicles and are fantastic platforms. The 40 is bare bones and the 80 is glorious. I’ve had an FJ 40 and lusted over 80’s. If the 80 had a manual transmission I would own one. The 80 is very easy to bullet proof, add chromoly inner front axles and a lift with a bit of armor, done.

I think the lack of a manual is ultimately the dealbreaker for me. I'm usually a big manual snob but I made an exception to try the 80 series platform, but man that vintage slushbox does nothing for me.

I could make an 80 manual but it would be expensive, I’ve converted other vehicles to manual and it always costs more then anticipated. It would recoup the costs if ever sold but it’s a lot of work without a garage.
