4.88 will do just fine I think 5.29 is a little too much if you're doing any high speed driving.

Shoot, I would think that with the 4.0, 4.56 would be ok too. Check out on the FJ forums to see what gears they run-- lots more people run 35's with FJ's. A good amount of people with FJ's run 35's on stock gears - I used to have one on 33s and barely even noticed a difference from stock.

Y'all need to read thru his "help" thread, his transmission is kicking in and out of OD since he went to the 4.88, I suggested the 5.29 gears just based on using Randy's R&P calculator.

I thought it was kicking into passing gear but belive it's the tourconveteor locking and unlocking, ether way I deffently belive it has something to do with the 488 gears but curium what every body is running in there 1 gen tacomas with 35s with the auto transmission, love my truck but hate the auto tranny, i just put the 488 gears in going to be more $$ to regear again, it's ether regear, switch to manual tranny are do some kind of better grade rebuild on my auto tranny which wouldn't be a bad idea if it would solve my problem, that way I'd have problem solved and future tranny problems handled to by a fresh rebuild...????? I need a light bulb to flash in my head nothing but a big ? Mark in there lol! I'm planning on keeping this truck for the long haul on average I drive maybe 100 miles a week but want to build the drive train and like a tank but good for on and off road my truck got to wheels, tires, fender flares, gears, tow pagage front and back, it's got the outer appearance I want just got to get the everthing else right!!

For an auto, id do 5.29s. Autos are geared higher then manuals. Manuals can do 4.88 fine.

hell i have 5.29s and a manual and its fucking awesome.

What model and engine is your truck? And is it a auto tranny?

    3.4L w/ auto trans.

I ran 4:88's when I was n/a and again after I supercharged it. No problems with shifting at highway speed. I pretty much runs like it did when it was stock.
