Marriage isn't about perfection. Instead, it's about friendship, respect, mutual support, communications, intimacy, humor, and so on. In that, there will be good times (which you have some control over and influence on) and not so great times. Don't focus so much on the latter, because the things just mentioned are truly important and will become even more so as you get older.

By the way, I've been married almost 37 years and, yes, I am truly happy. There's nobody in the world who knows me better, whom I can trust more, or whom I can share my thoughts, opinions, and feelings so freely with.

Not to mention that getting out of a marriage especially w/ children involved usually leaves a man broke as hell...hence the expression it's cheaper to keep her.

My advise to single men under 50 would be to date for as long as you can, enjoy your freedoms and pay for companionship if you have to. After 50, get married so you don't die a lonely man.

Okay. Selfishness is obviously not a great foundation for any marriage.

Getting married in less then a month and have been with the girl for almost 10 years. Love the girl more then anything and really feels like we are already married now. It's so awesome to know you have someone that you trust to take care of you and someone to share your life experiences with. Lots of good information in this thread!

Going for my first wedding anniversary in February. My wife is my life, I live it for her, our daughter and my step-son. I couldn't image waking up one day and she being gone.

I lived with my X g/f for 6 six years, never got married because we never were truly happy. We knew that.

As everyone else has said, communication. It was something I lacked in my previous relationships and really work on now. We still have our moments were things come between us, especially dealing with her X and having a step-son, it brings a whole new element to the game. But when we sit down and talk, me telling her what is bothering me, and LISTENING to her, we always feel better. Even if a resolution isn't always immediately found.

If you are not happy, start looking into why. Talk to her and see if it is something you can work out. If not, you both need to move on. My brother was married for 15 miserable years, two wonderful kids, but they show the signs of unhappy parents. He finally got divorced, and both of them found new people that make them happy, the kids are even doing better in school and socially now.

I know that if I were to get paralyzed my wife would be there for me and I would for her.. If you go out tapping ass with random chicks and something like that happens I am pretty sure they would hit the road.. Marriage is alot of work.. hell so is friendship if you spend everyday with one person something is bound to get on your nerves. Every second isnt always shit and giggles.. damn remember growing up and your parents getting on your nerves. just talk to her and listen to what she has to say as well and you can work through this.. remember why you married her in the first place.. Good luck and let us know

So I can't help but think- "Why is the OP on TW talking about his marriage problems instead of talking with his wife?" as soon as I read the first post. After reading thru all the rest of them- Seems a few folks agree.

You gotta talk to HER man-Not to us. We aren't there to see what she is "nagging" about or to see what is going on in your lives as individuals and a couple. If you are worried about your marriage- Spend the time telling her and trying to figure out what the problem is...cause 2 years in-You've got a long way to go if you are having spells of unhappy..

    ^^^ What he said. ^^^

By the way, saw your Coast Guard emblem and thought I'd add a quick hello, Brunes. Was a member of the Auxiliary for several years, handling public affairs (photos, feeding local news agencies, arranging press conferences, etc) at Pier 13 in Seattle (CG District 13 operations) and as a Branch Chief (BC-ATM) on the National Staff of the Auxiliary. Moved overseas for several years afterwards (gov civ employee) and dropped my membership. Off topic, so no need to reply.

Marriage is like riding a roller coaster. One minute your saying "Why did i do this?" next minute your saying "That was fun!" I don't know anybody that has a "perfect" marriage. My only 2 cents is this "Think before you speak". Anger can make you say the dumbest shit that you'll later regret. I've been married for over 20 years and have learned some lessons along the way.
