You do realize that your Off Road package is a performance package right?

And you are right, to each their own, but I'd doubt you would take a stock Tacoma over one that is raised and supercharged if you had a choice.

I was wondering if it is possible to make the good scoop on my trd pro functional? Has anyone used it as ram air intake? Or forced induction? Thanks guys

Why? Not much room for the necessary plumbing, and it's not high enough to "ram".

I was thinking it could act more like a snorkel. Get that true cold air into the intake. But I see what you're saying about there not being much room for the plumbing.

The top of the hood is one of the lowest pressure areas on a vehicle. Not a good place to locate an intake in spite of all the cool 60s and 70s factory and custom hotrods that made the look famous.

    To maximize a CAI

    1) wrap intake tube with a 4" dia heat sleeve from DEI , doing this lowers intake temp so you're actually seeing cooler temps

    2) using fire resistant foam padding and build up the upper section of the filter box so it is completely sealed from warmer engine compartment temps . Doing this will only allow colder ambient outside air to enter the CAI

    3) fab up a a intake tube and flanges by using the cowl panel area . this way you pick up cold air only from the windshield cowl area . This is similar to a NASCAR style air intake

Use components from this company to fab up a true cold air system

Of course a cold air intake system is worth it. That's why your truck came with one from the factory. Leave it alone and waste your money on something else.

Ok so I'm not necessarily looking for increased hp nor mpg, hoping an aftermarket CIA would help my 3rd gen engine become more efficient at high altitudes, most driving at 5500-8000ft. Would this help my cause, or spend money on other mods?

I can't tell if my engine sucks wind on slight inclines or the way I'm driving the auto trans. I've been driving manual for a decade so auto is foreign to me at the moment. It just seems like I'm sucking wind going up the slightest hill (constant gear 4 to 5 shifting...put in sport mode to bypass on most mountain roads).

This seems counterintuitive to some but the higher the altitude the less "intake" you need. The air is that much thinner so less flow can happen. If the air is 20% thinner then it's like your intake is 20% larger already.

Now let's wait for someone to say something like, "there's the same amount of oxygen at sea level as Mt Everest", and miss the point that yes there are fewer oxygen molecules

I've seen drag race cars run 2-3tenths faster using Cold air set ups

True, but those I bet didn't have one to start with like our trucks come factory with. That's the difference.

My 1984 Camaro ran a little faster and got a tad better mileage when I modded it but it had a single snorkel factory setup to start, so adding a second snorkel and relocating the intakes was a vast improvement.

Intakes do increase hp, but as others have said stack the performance parts.

intake + URD Maf Calibrator + exhaust

Lean out the fuel curve on WOT and feel the difference!

I've got the TRD CAI (came with the truck) and it just makes the truck louder... In my honest opinion thought about replacing it with a stock CAI the exhaust is enough for me.

I appreciate all the info guys. I think I'll spend my money elsewhere (armor). An aftermarket CAI doesn't sound worth it.
