Well, if you're a 2nd gen Tacoma guy, the new Tundra has a "car engine" so no.

Actually, the 64 and later El Caminos and the Falcon and Fairlane Rancheros we’re based on the station wagon floor pan, kind of like the Honda Ridgeline is based on the Honda Pilot. So, if the Ridgeline is a truck, then the El Camino is a truck as well.

General Motors 1/2 and 3/4 ton pickups from 1967-1972 had coil springs in the rear, leafs were optional.

    Full size trucks, C10 & C20 series.

Historical footnote: Notice the truck in the photo below has no rear bumper, they were optional on pickups until the 1980's.

Ahh yes, the Subaru Brat..short bed before short bed was a thing...haha

The 78-83 were based off the Malibu, not sure about prior off my skull.

I would say truck. Here in MA, it used to be you needed a commercial plate for any truck. My mom had a Elky in the early 1980s and it was considered a truck by the RMV here.

El Camino has more truck bed, less cabin space, and more payload than a DCSB Tacoma...

A 1974 GMC Sprint? Not so common and a bit fancier trimmed then the El Camino. (both used the Chevelle/Malibu chassis)

My comment was referring to the General Motors full size 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks (C10, C20) from 1967-72. For the 1973 redesign GM went to leaf springs on all the full size models.

No, fullsize 1/2 ton GMC pickup... 350 2 barrel automatic... my uncle bought it new in 1974... he gave it to me in 1997. It only had @54,000 miles, but was rusted out badly.

I was surprised when I found it had coils under the back... I thought they all had leafs... but this one definately had coils...

    Hmm...

No parts listing for any 73 and up with rear coils -- a lot could have happened in the 23 years he had the truck, perhaps the original frame was damaged and the cab/box was set on an older frame along the way. We didn't have to worry about check engine lights, ABS and air bags back then.

If the truck is still out there somewhere there might be another guy wondering as well.

1969 El Camino was the best year in my opinion, since I owned one. Mine had coils on the back and I installed some Air shocks to hold more weight. Sold it to my little brother with the promise, when he got tired of it, he would sell it back to me, ask me how that worked out:annoyed:

IDK... that's possible... I don't remember anything like that, but I would have been too young to know probably... I was born in '73...

It stuck in my mind because, after I acquired the truck, I noticed it had a coil spring rear, and at the time, I didn't know any company had ever made a full size truck with coils in the rear. That was weird to me...

I watched somebody buy a GMC Sprint from a junk yard, and towed it to their shop. I forgot GM had a GMC version at one time.

    Funny story...
The uncle that gave me the '74 was one of those old timers that pinched pennies until they screamed... but he was also apt to 'pull your leg' from time to time...

I drove the truck home from his house (@30 miles, mostly interstate) on a Sunday afternoon. The following week, he asked me if I made it home ok... I said 'well, yes, but those front tires were so bald, I couldn't hold it in 2 lanes at 55 mph'... he looked at me a little funny, and said 'that truck has never seen 55 before... and the front tires are the originals'...

I never did find out if he was telling the truth, but the tires looked like they could have been 23 years old...

Sorry for the hijack... I'll see myself out now!
